RHP Erik Cordier: Cordier was the top prospect at the Pre-Draft Showcase, the same spot he claimed after the Indoor Showcase in February. In fact, it was pretty much a duplicate performance. Cordier topped out at 94 mph on his fastball and was solid around the strike zone with the pitch. Cordier’s change up has a chance to be a special pitch. He gets over and inside the ball from his high ¾’s to overhand release point and it turns over hard at 79-80 mph. Cordier’s arm speed is good on the pitch and it’s going to be a big league weapon against left handed hitters. And just like at the Indoor, it took Cordier about 6-8 curveballs to figure out his release point on his curveball and bring any quality spin and command to the pitch. Once he found his rhythm with the breaking ball, it was 78 mph with sharp, tight spin. Cordier’s arm strength, secondary pitches and pro-style body put him among the elite high school pitchers in the country.

Erik Cordier: Cordier has been regarded as one of the better right handed pitching prospects in the Class of 2004 for some time and the way he threw at the Indoor Showcase leads us to believe he’s in for a big spring. Cordier has an ideal double plus projectable body for a young pitcher, with a long slender trunk and good wiry strength throughout. He has a smooth, very easy arm stroke and really accelerates his arm well from the back of his arm arc through release. Cordier has occasionally struggled with his release point and command in the past but he looks vastly improved in this area. He’s lowered his release point from just about overhand to high ¾’s and this has improved his command and especially improved his curveball. After getting the rust and butterflies out over the first 10 pitches, Cordier was solid in the strike zone for the rest of his performance and especially good from the stretch. His fastball was steady between 90 and 92 mph and Cordier threw many more 91’s than 90’s. After finding his curveball release point, he threw some nasty hammers at 77-78 mph with big sharp 2-plane break. From the overhand release point Cordier didn’t get this kind of depth to his curveball but we saw some plus big league breaking balls from him this time out. Cordier is probably going to be around the mid 90s, maybe before the draft, but he doesn't need to be there to create a ton of draft interest. This young Wisconsin native will be scouted by every Major League organization this spring. Cordier has signed to attend North Carolina State.

We’ve seen Cordier many times over the years and know that the National Showcase wasn’t his best performance. It’s a good indication that a pitcher is a great prospect when he can throw 90-91 mph with two solid secondary pitches and you apologize for him. Cordier throws from an overhand release point with a loose, whippy arm action. He maintains his height well through his delivery and his release point gives him very good downward plane to the plate. Cordier’s fastball is pretty straight but he will get some running action on it occasionally. His slider in Lincoln was in the 78-79 mph range, with a short late break to it that lacked some of the power we’ve seen before. In fact, Cordier’s second best pitch in Lincoln was 75 mph change up that had good deception and nice run and sink to it. It wouldn’t surprise us at all if the next time we run into Cordier this summer he’s touching 93-94 mph and maintaining that type of velocity. His package is one of the better ones. Look for a ton of MLB interest.

Big time pitching prospect! 90+ fastball with life and command. Good down hill plane. Good mechanics over the top delivery. Good rotation on the breaking ball low to mid 70s. Quick to the plate out of the stretch. Great pitchers body! Could become a high pick in 04.
