Erick Kumming: Kumming is a tall and angular sophomore infielder/catcher/right handed pitcher from Indiana with a low waist and projectable frame. Kumming showed good athletic ability in a turn catching and with the bat in his hand. We obviously didn’t get to see him play infield. He has a smooth left handed stroke and some good bat speed and was comfortable setting up and receiving the ball. Kumming’s velocity on his pop throws was in a good 75-76 mph range, real good for a sophomore. He warrants watching as a position prospect. He has lots of physical potential on the mound but is very raw mechanically. Kumming threw his fastball 78-80 mph and would sometimes come across the pitch and get good cutting action to it. He threw some breaking balls early at 66-68 mph that had some good spin to them but then settled into throwing a big breaking 58-60 mph curveball. With his release point and arm stroke, we’d encourage him to keep working on the slider-type breaking ball. Probably the two biggest mechanical issues for Kumming to tackle in order to take advantage of his natural abilities are his over rotation and drift in his delivery and his palm up position at the start of his arm stroke forward. Kumming is young and could improve quickly, though. His left handed bat is very impressive and he has a very good projectable baseball body.
