Day 1 of this year’s 17u PG Super25 National Championship is in the books. If today is an indication for the rest of the week, this is going to turn out to a talent-filled event.

Mid-Atlantic show – Kerr faced off against the Salty Dawgs Monday morning at the Boombah Sports Complex. The Salty Dawgs rolled out of the gate with lefthander Jeyco Grullon (2019, Brooklyn, N.Y.) toeing the rubber. Jeyco showed a three-pitch mix with a fastball, Slider and changeup. He pounded the zone with all three pitches throwing from a three-quarters arm slot. While doing a great job of switching speeds, Jeyco was also to show movement on all three pitches, especially the fastball, which had late arm-side run. Jeyco threw 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and one earned run. He topped out with his fastball at 84, sat at 79-84 and threw his slider consistently at 74 mph.

Salty Dawgs scrappy lefthanded hitting leadoff hitter Evan Collazo (2019, Brooklyn, N.Y.) showed promise at the plate. Collazo showed a quick swing with a level bat path. He controlled the zone well showing a keen eye as well as advance approach at the dish. When it was all said and done he went 1-for-2 with a line drive single, one walk and a run scored. The team’s second baseman, he also possesses plus speed and displays a high baseball IQ on the basepaths which allows him to steal bases at ease while posing as a threat for opposing catchers.

Catcher Robert Fadel (2018 C Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Fadel showed plus power with his double to left field using a slight uppercut swing with a pull-side approach in the Salty Dawgs’ loss to Mid-Atlantic Show – Kerr.

Mid-Atlantic Show – Kerr also threw out a good amount of talent for their match against the Salty Dawgs. Mid-Atlantic was lead defensively by their catcher Charles (Chase) Burroughs (2019, Mechanicsville, Md.). Burroughs has advanced receiving skills behind the plate with a plus arm as evidenced by a 1.97-second pop time. Burroughs was able to control the game from behind the plate and hold runners at bay. Chase is committed to play at UNC – Charlotte.

Zach Fisher (2018, Hancock Bridge, N.J.) had a two-hit game on Monday, going 2-for-3 with a triple as well as two RBIs. Fisher showed some power with his triple to the left-center gap, and also showed some athleticism legging out the three-base hit as his team’s catcher. He will continue to play at the next level at Chesapeake College.

Iona commit Jake Fields (2018 3B Wenonah, N.J.) also had a two-hit game for the Show. Fields went 2-for-3 with two singles as well as a walk. He showcased his ability to hit the ball to all fields as well as his quick hands at the plate. In addition, Fields is a sure-handed third basemen that has the ability to steal hits away from opposing teams.

TNXL Academy brought a lot of talent for their doubleheader day. Leading the way for this group was Florida commit and outfielder Hylan Hall (2019, Ocoee, Fla.), who went 2-for-4 in their first game against Baseball U. Hall showed some pop with a double, which was a great complement to his excellent play in center field for the Ducks. He continued to show his advanced baseball IQ tacking on two stolen bases in as many games. His 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame will work well at the next level as he looks to take his talents to the SEC after 2019.

Third baseman Christian Bernabe (2019, Deltona, Fla.) had a great day at the plate for the Ducks. In his two combined games he went 4-for-6 with one double, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Bernabe also showed an advanced approach at the plate as he we able to work deep into counts to get a pitch to drive. Bernabe has a level bat plane and a short, quick stroke that is the reason for his ability to hit the ball to all fields.

Another impressive piece that is a part of the TNXL Ducks lineup is right fielder Noah Dickerson (2018, Windermere, Fla.). Dickerson had one hit on Monday with three RBIs. He has a tall and skinny frame at 6-foot-4, 180-pounds with a lot of room to fill. With a lefty stick at the plate, he uses a high leg-kick and a slight uppercut to elevate the ball to the outfield. The most impressive part of Dickerson’s work at the plate is his unreal bat speed, which allows him to pull any pitch with ease. He is committed to Stetson University.
