Boston College 3, No. 23 Virginia 2

After running into a buzz saw that was Virginia ace Connor Jones in game one, Boston College rallied for a 3-2 victory in the second game of the series, pushing for a rubber match Sunday afternoon. Similar to the opening game of the series, both Boston College and Virginia received stellar starting pitching meaning the offense was sparse once again with the Eagles eventually walking off in the bottom of the ninth courtesy of an errant throw.

Even last spring as a sophomore Boston College’s Justin Dunn was making noise as a prospect for the professional ranks thanks to his fastball that would work into the mid-90s though there was still work to be done as evidenced by his 4.94 ERA. Jump to 2016 and Dunn has been much more consistent while working exclusively out of the bullpen and he’s seen a drastic improvement in nearly every statistical category while continuing to rise up draft boards.

Saturday afternoon marked the first time this spring that the 6-foot-1, 184-pound righthander started a game and if he’s capable of replicating the type of performance he put together then he’ll undoubtedly see up arrows in the draft stock column. Knowing he worked into the mid-90s last fall it was of little surprise when reports began to circulate early this spring that he was popping 97s and 98s while serving as the team’s closer, working much shorter stints than that of a starting pitcher. Naturally, for a pitcher who’s transitioning from the backend to a starting role, the biggest question that was on the mind of the 40 or so scouts in attendance was “can Dunn carry his big stuff deep into a pitch count”. And if Saturday served as any indication of things to come then he passed with flying colors.
