Giancarlo Cortez is a 2019 1B/LHP with a 5-11 180 lb. frame from Chula Vista, CA who attends St Augustine HS. Medium frame with a strong, athletic build. Listed as a switch hitter, but hit exclusively from the right side in batting practice. Narrow, straight stance with a high back elbow set. Lower half launches to contact with rotational actions. Simple, compact line drive swing plane and mid-field approach. Shows excellent balance throughout swing with good barrel control allowing for consistent line drive to all fields. Swing path generated consistent, squared contact throughout batting practice. Worked out defensively from first base showing smooth glove skills while funneling baseball out front. Moves well to both sides and coming off the bag. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot generating good carry across the infield with accuracy, topped at 75 mph. Also pitched showing good lower half drive to the plate. Carries momentum through release well. Compact arm cirlce back at separation and releases from a three-quarters arm slot with good extension to finish. Consistently threw stirkes near the bottom of the zone with a fastball in the mid to upper 70's. Curveball had 11/5 break with good spin and occasional depth. Good two way prospect. Tools will continue to develop with maturity and repetition. Good student as well.
