A.J Grijalva is a 2017 3B/C/RHP with a 5-9 175 lb. frame from Brawley, CA who attends Brawley HS. Compact frame with a solid, athletic build. Left handed hitter with a narrow, open stance and higher hand/back elbow set. Launches to contact with linear lower half actions creating heavy shift into front side. Line drive swing path with natural loft and a mid-field to opposite field approach. Shows best barrel skills and contact when driving the baseball to the opposite field gap. Worked out defensively from the infield and behind the plate. From the infield shows developing glove skills while funneling with slight flipping acitons. Flashed solid first step angles while moving to both sides. Throws across the infield form a three-quarters slot that generates accuracy across with some on line carry, topped at 71 mph. From behind the plate shows a taller set with a two piece throwing actions. Smooth paced tempo through transition with clean glove to hand exchanges. Created some on line carry with accuracy to the bag topping at 71 mph, best workout pop time of 2.07. Also pitched using a smooth paced delivery while creating some coil in front hip at gather. Creates extension at release form a three-quarters arm slot with a quick arm action. Lower half gets on line early and stays balanced throughout. Fastball flashed some life at times in the upper 70's to lower 80's. Curveball has 11/5 shape with good depth when down in the zone. Primarily works the bottom of the strike zone with both pitches. Developing command to the edges of the zone. Good student as well.
