2016 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Stephen Matthews is a 2017 SS/2B with a 5-9 165 lb. frame from Tupelo, MS who attends Tupelo High School. Younger player with a lean, slender build, athleticism, and room to continue to fill out physically. Posted a 6.99 time in the 60 yard dash. Primary shortstop, showed short footwork, clean actions to backhand, and moved well to the ball. Clean release and transfer with developing arm strength. At the plate, started with a wide base, high hand set, active hands, and a toe tap timing mechanism. Generated torque through lower half with intent to drive the ball. Showed quick hands at the plate with an all fields approach. Showed some ability to generate carry with a line drive swing plane. Will continue to improve with additional lower half incorporation and strength. Very good student.
