Our numbers dwindle, yet we persevere....

The top three (by polls) face the bottom three this week, so we could have some predictable results. I’ll also throw in some conference championship analysis in this thread...maybe later. Two OSUs and two ASUs play this week.

This week’s games
  • OSU at Cal
  • UW at Utah
  • Ariz at Ore
  • USC at WSU
  • Stan at UCLA
  • ASU at Oklahoma State [XOSU]
  • Louisiana-Lafayette [YLL] at Arkansas State [ZASU]
An example ballot would look like this:
  • OSU 3-0
  • UW 3-0
  • Ore 2-1
  • USC 2-1
  • Stan 3-0
  • XOSU 2-1
  • YLL 2-1
Week 12 series
  • OSU at Cal. Last year this week, Cal played at Corvallis and all 17 of our pick-em participants picked OSU to sweep...which they did. (That’s right, we had 17 people playing last year.) This year the Beavers take on the league’s third worst team in Berkeley. Oregon State is currently 34-39 all-time versus Cal, and a sweep this year will bring the Beavers within a year of possibly evening or surpassing the PedoBears. If anyone can compete with Utah for the league’s worst offensive stats, it’s Cal, but they’re not quite that bad. Pitching is a little better than Utah’s, but not significantly and probably not enough to make up thee difference in offense.
  • Our number two team UW faces the worst team, Utah, in SLC. The Huskies’ bats could take kindly to that Rocky Mountain high altitude. UW is in the top five in all offensive stats save triples (6th); Utah is last except for triples (7th) and OBP (10th, ahead of Cal). Pitching stats are also about the same for UW (5th or better) and Utah (mostly 10th or 11th, but not across the board on everything).
  • And the Ducks, the conference’s third-best team (by polls), although they fell to 5th in league standings after getting swept last week, faces the second-worst by record, Arizona. If the Ducks can sweep Arizona, they might skip ahead of both ASU and USC, back into third place. But the Wildcats have something the other two worst teams don’t have: an offense. Arizona is tops in the league in total bases, plate appearances, average, hits, triples, steal attempts, stolen bags, and sac flies. And they are third in OBP and runs, second in walks, fourth inn RBIs, and 5th in slugging. Their pitching is near the bottom, although they do have competent starters; whereas the Ducks’ pitching is near the top. Could be an interesting series and a must-win for the Ducks.
  • Surprise contender USC travels to Pullman to face Wazzu. After sweeping rival UCLA on the road, the Trojans are now tied with ASU for third in the conference. And because ASU is playing OOC this week, USC has an opportunity to put some distance between themselves and the Devils and stay ahead of the Ducks. The Cougs are hot or old, and capable of taking one from even the top two teams in the league, so it’ll be a tough task for USC to win let alone sweep this series. Statistically USC is superior to Wazzu in practically every category except triples, stolen bases, walks allowed, and balks.
  • Stanford and UCLA look like the closest Pac-12 matchup this week. But both teams are out of postseason discussions except for “what-if” scenarios. It’s looking like the reigning national champion Pac-12 team for a second year in a row will not make the postseason after winning the title. As for Stanford, how long can their ISR and RPI numbers stay so high if they continue to lose, as they have been?
  • Our OOC series has ASU facing one of the other OSUs, Oklahoma State. Despite the Cowboys’ national ranking and better win-loss record, they are only one ISR spot ahead of the devils, so this could be a good series, with positive consequences for the conference should ASU prevail. OSU’s batting average is 176th (.263) compared to ASU’s #83 (.280). Their OBP is better (#46, .376) than ASU’s (#85, .366). In terms of pitching, OSU is #60 in ERA (3.27) to ASU’s #107 (3.68).
  • The non-Pac series focuses on a conference few of us here know much about: the Sun Belt. Since this appears to be the only chance Louisiana-Lafayette has to play a decent team. Arkansas State in the Sun Belt’s number two team, four games behind the Ragin’ Cajuns. With ULL at ISR #3 and Ark State at #59, it’s similar to the OSU at Cal pairing. Even if the Red Wolves sweep the Cajuns, they will not surpass them in the standings, so the league belongs to Lou-La. And the Cajuns won’t face anyone in the top 150 after this weekend, so this is the only “tough” opponent they’ll face until postseason play. They did lose the last game this weekend in the 9th inning to a subpar UT-Arlington, so it’s possible the Wolves “rise to the occasion”.

Lilek couldn't make it out of the third in Oklahoma, 5 runs (3 earned) in 2.2 IP. OSU 5-3 over ASU.

DM, I agree with your post in another thread about your desire to see the Ducks run the table. While I rarely root for the Ducks, I think a good showing by them bolsters the Pac 12. They have good enough pitching that if they get hot, they can find their way to the Supers or even the CWS.

Yeah, but then again.... I was talking to my son last night and said we have to go watch them play the Devils when they come to Tempe next week. Pete goes to ASU. And I'll be wearing Beaver gear. It'll be hard. ;-)

I almost went to ASU. I visited the University with a buddy of mine during my Senior year of high school. The weather and women were both fantastic.
