North Carolina was already the hub for three summer-college leagues, and along came a fourth in 2013—the All-American Collegiate League. The new league has a vision of being more national in scope than either the Southern Collegiate or Carolina-Virginia League, who limit their recruiting focus, and aims to go after higher-profile Division I talent more in line with the reach that the more established Coastal Plain League has.

That may occur in time, but the All-American League had only a sprinkling of D-I prospects in its inaugural season. Most of the players given the best shot of playing at the next level, such as Bluefield (Va.) College rising senior outfielder Chris Rosa, came from more unconventional talent sources.

Nonetheless, it was a successful first season on the field for the All-American League, with the Mooresville All-Americans narrowly beating out the Rowan Patriots in the race for first place in the regular season, with the Patriots then turning the table on Mooresville in the league championship series.

1. CHRIS ROSA, of, Mooresville All-Americans (Bluefield, Va./SR in 2014)
The 6-foot, 200-pound Rosa spent the 2012 season with Mooresville, when it was a member of the Carolina-Virginia League, and didn’t stand out to the degree then that he did this summer. As an obscure sophomore a year ago out of Massasoit (Mass.) CC, he hit .287-4-23 for the All-Americans with a team high 25 stolen bases; this summer, as an undrafted junior out of Bluefield College, a Virginia-based NAIA school, he hit a more robust .374-8-31 with 19 steals, topping the new AACBL in homers, RBI and stolen bases. Not only did the lefthanded swinging Rosa dominate the league from a performance standpoint in almost every way possible, but his tools were superior to any player in the league in almost every phase of his game as well. His power and overall hitting ability stood out, but so did his outfield play, with his arm, clocked at 94 mph, possibly his best tool. His speed may actually grade out as his weakest overall tool, even as he topped the AACBL in steals. At the league All-Star Game skills competition, he was clocked in the 60 in 6.74 seconds. For all his tools, Rosa has always been an afterthought in the draft, but his day of reckoning should undoubtedly come a year from now if he can produce anywhere near the season as a college senior that he did this summer.
