2017 MLB Draft Pick/Signings Database | Lewis, Greene, Gore go 1-2-3
The deadline for signing players from the 2017 MLB Draft has come and gone, as players that were selected June 12-14 in the First Year Player Draft had until 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday to sign with their respective clubs. Of the 55 former PG All-Americans that were selected, 42 elected to begin their professional careers.
The collective total of the bonuses these former PG All-Americans signed for is quite staggering, as that total came to $69,560,370, and that doesn't include the bonus for 20th-round pick Mitchell Traver (Angels), whose bonus information was not available. This includes the draft's No. 1 overall pick, Royce Lewis, who signed with the Twins for $6,725,000.
Of the 55 players taken, that's an average of over $1.26 million per player. Of the 42 players that signed, that's an average of over $1.65 million per player.
It went down to the final day for three PG All-Americans – Hunter Greene, David Peterson and Jeremiah Estrada – who all ended up signing with the teams that drafted them. Greene's $7.23 million bonus was the largest of any player selected in the 2017 MLB Draft, and the fourth-highest bonus ever. Greene was named the Jackie Robinson Player of the Year in last year's Classic and also won the event's Home Run Challenge prior to the game, of which he started on the mound for the West squad.
All of the players – 38 in total – that were selected in the top 12 rounds ended up signing. The first player drafted not to sign was Garrett Mitchell, a UCLA recruit taken by the A's in the 14th round.
Since the game's inception in 2003, 188 PG All-Americans have been selected in the first round of the draft. One hundred and forty one former PG All-Americans have played in the big leagues, which includes the seven that were named to the upcoming 2017 Major League All-Star Game in Miami, including starters Carlos Correa, Buster Posey and Bryce Harper.
Here are the Perfect Game All-Americans selected in the 2017 MLB Draft and the bonuses they signed for. For the players that didn't sign their college commitment (or the school they attended in 2016 that they intend to return to for the 2018 season) is listed in parenthesis.
