1/24/12: Plenty has been written on Carlos Correa in the past few weeks since his performance at the 2012 Perfect Game World Showcase in early January. Even more has been written since Correa emerged a year previously as perhaps the best prospect to come out of Puerto Rico in over 20 years at the 2011 PG World Showcase. That’s fitting, as there are so many ways to analyze and scout Correa; he is one of the more unique and exciting talents to come through the prospect ranks in many years. He was the first Puerto Rican in the nine years the event has been held to be named to the Aflac/Perfect Game All-American Game, where in August he was awarded the Rawlings Defensive Player of the Year Award. There is a very good chance that Correa will become the highest Puerto Rican drafted who lived on the island during his draft year. Veteran big league backup Ramon Castro currently holds this honor, having been drafted by the Astros with the 17th pick in the 1994 draft. (2010 Royals first round pick, fourth overall, IF Christian Colon is the highest drafted native Puerto Rican. He was born and raised in Puerto Rico but attended high school and college in the United States.) “Unique” is not too strong a word when discussing Correa. His arm strength qualifies under that category without question. Not only did Correa set an all-time Perfect Game record at the World Showcase by throwing 97 mph across the infield, he did it with game footwork and game actions. He is guilty of depending on his arm strength too much during games on occasion, just as a young top prospect basketball player will frequently depend on his jumping ability over simpler means of scoring. But if you watch Correa carefully during infield and during relaxed moments on the field, you see that he has the flashy, quick hands and the ability to make plays on the run that are typical of top level shortstops. While there is some understandable talk about his ability to play shortstop as he fills out and get stronger, I personally have no doubt at all he can stay at shortstop for the next decade. Is he a lesser athlete with fewer applicable tools and skills than a Cal Ripken Jr./Derek Jeter type defensive shortstop at the same age? I certainly wouldn’t go there. But where Correa could really, really stand out if everything comes together for him at shortstop is offensively. At a position where only four players in the Major Leagues hit more than 16 home runs in 2011 (Troy Tulowitzki, J.J. Hardy, Asdrubal Cabrera, Jhonny Peralta), Correa has legitimate home run power to all fields. The only two big league shortstops who had over an .825 OPS last season, Tulowitzki and Jose Reyes, are both playing under $100M+ contracts. While it is no sure thing by any means that Correa can reach those heights, he has a chance to do that with the bat. One aspect of Correa’s overall package that the baseball public and perhaps even most of the higher level scouts don’t fully appreciate yet is that he is one of the more intelligent and mature prospects in the 2012 high school draft class. He is a 4.0 student who would be very comfortable socially at the University of Miami in the unlikely event that he plays baseball in college. Correa has also done over the last year, to a profound degree, what every scout and coach most wants to see a player do; he has steadily and demonstrably improved his tools and skills in every area. That’s not something to be underestimated.

Carlos Correa is a 2012 SS with a 6-4 190 lb. frame from Santa Isabel, PR who attends PR Baseball Academy. Outstanding athletic build, inevitable comparisons with Alex Rodriguez at same age. Unparalleled infield arm strength, PG record 97 mph in drills, does it with game actions and footwork, smooth quick soft hands, could work through ball more aggressively but doesn't need to with arm strength. Big improvement with bat, showed plus leverage and bat speed, long loose extension, back spins the ball with plus carry, consistent hard contact, can make swing adjustments and pull hands in but wants to extend. Huge BP and game home runs to left centerfield. Keeps getting better! Excellent student, signed with Miami.

Carlos Correa is a 2012 SS with a 6-3 190 lb. frame from Santa Isabel, PR who attends PR Baseball Academy. Outstanding physical build, long and strong with excellent projection. 6.83 runner, gliding defensive actions, shows range, fluid and athletic, soft hands at the ball, quick exchange, plus/plus raw arm strength. Right handed hitter, pull back load, hard poke stride, creates length looking to lift, very good raw bat speed, lets the ball get deep, power approach with leverage, will have to make swing adjustments but has all the tools to do so. High ceiling talent. Very good student. Named to the Perfect Game All American Classic team.

Carlos Correa is a 2012 SS/RHP with a 6-3 185 lb. frame from Santa Isabel, PR who attends PR Baseball Academy. Outstanding athletic build, loose and strong with plenty of projection. Easy defensive actions, moves through the ball well, plus balance, plays the game under control, excellent arm strength, very accurate game throws, may outgrow shortstop and be a plus/plus defensive third baseman. Spread stance, deep load, present bat speed, quick hands, squares it up consistently, ball jumps, has lift, could hit taller, 6.79 runner. Also pitched, simple delivery, overhand release, very downhill, fluid arm, threw strikes. Fastball steady 88-90 mph, curveball flashed hard spin and bite. Higher ceiling as a position player but can't ignore pitching talent. Absolute top level prospect. Very good student.
