Swing & Miss on RHP Nick Jones

MARIETTA, GA-- Nick Jones has swing and miss stuff. And in his performance on July 3rd at the 2011 18u WWBA National Championship it wasn't just opposing hitters that whiffed on Jones.

For the 2011 season Perfect Game has begun a new partnership with GameChanger, which has streamlined the process of scoring games and making information available to fans. The addition has dramatically improved the quality of exposure players and teams receive at PG events. However, as with the implementation of any drastic technological change there are bound to be growing pains initially.

One such growing pain was felt by Jones, whose six inning no-decision on July 3rd would have generated a lot of attention. However, the game stream of the East Cobb Orioles matchup with the Southeastern Athletics mistakenly credited a different pitcher than Jones with the performance. Jones, a 6' 5" 205 lb RHP prospect from Woodstock, GA will be playing his collegiate baseball at UNC-Greensboro next year.

Jones impressed with a fastball that sat 88-92 mph with a sharp downhill angle that creates sink. He compliments it well with a plus breaking ball up to 81 and a changeup that was up to 84 and has shown steady improvement. After missing most of 2010 with a knee injury Jones had been a bit behind in terms of development in the past but from a pure stuff standpoint there is enough talent there to believe that he has a bright future on the mound.

While it is unfortunate that the mistake prevented Jones from getting the credit he deserved in real time during the outing, it does serve to underscore the importance of accuracy to the PG staff. While 100% accuracy is unlikely, we certainly strive to come as close as possible.
