2003 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Burgess is an athletic catcher who showed us plenty of impressive tools, especially with his bat. He has a wiry 6-1, 180 frame that has deceptive strength to it. At the plate, Burgess has a big leg kick trigger but gets his foot down and takes an aggressive, hard cut at the ball. He hit a high and deep home run during batting practice to get our attention, then continued to make solid contact in games. Burgess’s swing has some loft to it and he should be able to develop his power potential quickly. As a 7.14 runner, Burgess has some body life and can undoubtedly play other positions on the field as well. He is a rare-two handed catcher but receives the ball well and has a quick release to second base. He consistently showed average arm strength and was in the 1.95 area on his pop times. He's a very interesting catching prospect with a bright future.
