Matthew Bates is a 2023 SS/RHP, OF with a 5-11 165 lb. frame from Vista, CA who attends Rancho Buena Vista. Medium, athletic frame with a high waist and a lean, projectable build with room to fill throughout. Ran a 7.32 60-yard dash. Primary shortstop, fields the ball out front, takes longer strides moving towards the ball, works through the backhand well and has athleticism to actions, nice arm strength across the diamond. Graded out higher in this look from the outfield, high energy actions and employs a crow hop for additional momentum, effort at release but shows a quick arm and accuracy to throws, solid arm strength and carry at present. Also pitched, small rock step into a leg lift up to belt with a hip turn at top of balance point; similar quick arm, effort at release and topped out at 76 mph. Pitched off fastball, gets mistimed occasionally at release but shows life through the zone, flashed a curveball with short depth. Righthanded hitter, begins with a wide base and a high hand set and back elbow at the plate; loads hands back at start of swing, limited shift through lower half. Upper body dominant swing, keeps hands inside the ball and projects with additional extension out front. Flashes strength and comfort hitting to pull side, works on a linear plane through the zone.
