Lucas Bates is a 2019 OF/RHP with a 6-2 195 lb. frame from Riverside, CA who attends John W. North High School. Large, broad shouldered build with present physical strength proportioned well throughout. Primary outfielder, fields the ball out front and works into a short and compact arm action, upper body dominant release and can get additional lower half involved, worked around the intended base with accuracy. Shows balance on the charge in the infield, similar short arm action and works behind the ball. Also pitched, leg lift up past belt with a hip turn coil at top; gets tall on his backside and hides the ball well through the back working to a three-quarters release. Fastball topped out at 77 mph, short sinking life to fastball and can incorporate additional lower half into release. Induces ground ball contact with fastball, mixed a curveball that flashed 11-5 shape up to 68 mph. Righthanded hitter, begins with a slightly open stance and does a nice job of getting closed moving into contact with a leg lift trigger. Employs a simple trunk turn with swing and shows nice raw strength off the barrel when squared, can continue to get more extension out front with hands. Line drive contact off the barrel with back spin to the middle of the field, swings with intent and creates torque in swing.
