Matthew Ellis is a 2018 C/1B with a 6-3 210 lb. frame from Waddy, KY who attends Shelby County HS. Strong and broad shouldered build with good present physicality. Primary catcher with excellent arm strength recorded up to 82 mph. Good carry on throws and gains ground well. Bit of a longer release, but throws that are online and accurate; arm strength is a weapon behind the plate. Lefthanded hitter with a high hand set and a high back elbow. Starts open and has an inside path to contact. Present bat speed to the offensive profile with quickness to hands. Level, even swing plane and can create good backspin when squared up. Consistent pull side contact and flashed the ability to work to the opposite field. Verbal commitment to Tennessee. Good student.
