Austin Metcalf is a 2008 first baseman from Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida, with a 6'2'', 247 lb. frame. He is a young player with a well proportioned body with present strength. Defensively he has nice footwork around the first base bag and gets himself in position to field the ball and receive throws from the infield. At the plate he is a right handed hitter who uses a closed stance. There is strength and power in his swing, and he can drive the ball to both gaps. Currently he is a gap hitter, but we think he has projectable power that will allow him to hit the ball to the deep parts of the park as he learns what pitches to drive. For a power hitter, Metcalf does a good job of using the entire field, and he doesn't appear to get pull conscious. He has very good hand strength and gets leverage in his swing. Metcalf is a young hitter with upside, and his bat will carry him.
