Jonathan Peters is a 2007 1B/3B with a 6'0'', 228 lb. frame from Ontario CA, who attends Chino HS. He has a large, strong, physical body. Peters at times looked like a middle of the line-up masher. He has good hands and good bat speed, able to accelerate through contact. His set-up and approach are good and he is a disciplined hitter, displaying that trait by staying back on the curveball and hitting it to the opposite field. The ball jumps off his bat and his present day power rates as above average, particularly to the pull side. Peters transfers his weight well too. He is going to hit for power and drive in runs. There are times when his front hip does not get closed and that hurts his plate coverage. He starts with an open stance and too often allowed his energy to leak early. Staying closed longer could make a huge difference in his consistency. Otherwise, he is a very good hitting prospect. Some will not like his body, but he is going to hit for someone. Defensively he moves well around the bag and has soft hands, playing 1st base with feel. He does not have great range, but his feet move well and he will make the plays in his range and be at the very least an average defensive 1st baseman. Follow Peters closely, especially if he ends up going the JC route. Given a couple of more years and reps, he could really be something as a hitter.
