Matthew Phillips is a 2008 C/P/IF with a 6'0'', 232 lb. frame from Trinity FL, who attends Mitchell HS. He has a thick, strong body throughout. Phillips hits with his hands with very little lower half involvement and a rotational swing. He flashes his strength on occasion but needs to get that strong body more involved in his swing to show power. Phillips shows good raw arm strength on defense, throwing 74 mph from behind the plate and 80 mph across the diamond from first base. He has a long arm stroke and release that slows down his pop times. Phillips was a high energy defensive player during the games who showed good hustle and sound receiving skills. He also pitched, showing a good balanced delivery and easy arm action. His fastball was up to 78 mph and it looked like there was more velocity there if he would get some more extension out front and let the ball go. Phillips is also a good student.
