2007 West Coast Top Prospect Showcase
Derek Baum is a 2008 C/OF with a 5'11'', 175 lb. frame from Santee, CA who attends Grossmont HS. He has a strong and compact build well suited for catching. Baum is a good baseball player with aptitude for the game and good all-around ability for the college game. Offensively he has a chance to be a middle of the line-up RBI man. He has strong hands and good bat speed, generated with a compact stroke. He lets the ball travel and hits the ball hard in the middle of the field. Defensively Baum is an above average defensive catcher. He showed off quick feet behind plate and a strong, quick arm. His catch/throw skills are solid and playable now. Baum also did a nice job on pop-ups, which seems to be a very difficult for many high school catchers. He plays with good energy and has a steady, consistent approach to the game. Should be a very solid D1 college catcher.
