Kyle Buchanan is a 2008 C/IF with a 6'2'', 205 lb. frame from Auburn, WA who attends Auburn HS. He has a present strong, square shouldered pro style body for a catcher. Buchanan is a very good defensive catcher, especially when you overlook his pure arm strength, which is only average. He is a quiet receiver who sets up well behind the plate and shifts and blocks well. His exchange is easy and consistent and he was 1.99 in drills, 2.02 in games and 2.02 in between innngs, most of them right on the bag. He has the right mental tools for the position as well. Offensively, Buchanan hits from a wide base with a short stride and a quiet balanced swing. He has good bat speed and the strength in his hands enables him to drive the ball hard on contact. Buchanan is not a quick twitch athlete and he does have problems right now getting the bat started and timing pitches. Buchanan runs like a prototypical catcher and will have to be mindful of maintaining his body life and quickness. He is a very good student.
