2003 Sunshine West Showcase
Welch is a pitcher and infielder from Texas with potential at the next level in both positions. He is a 6 foot tall right-hander with a slender build. His arm works well coming from a 3/4 arm slot. He threw an 80-83 mph fastball and a 73-74 mph curve. Both pitches worked well and he knows how to use them. He did show a lot of effort with his delivery indicating that he may not have his best stuff for all 7 innings, but he was very effective this weekend. He struck out 8 batters in 4 innings of work and pitches with lots of energy. At the plate, he can swing the bat with quick hands and he showed a tough mentality by swinging at only strikes. He made solid line drive contact and plays the game hard. Welch is an example of how not to judge too heavily on BP. He proved that he can hit live pitching.
