2004 Indoor Pitchers/Catchers Showcase
Miles Clauss: Clauss is a big junior right hander from Illinois with broad sloping shoulders and a firm lower half. He has a great pitchers body that still projects nicely. He has a bit of drift to the plate and a short arm stroke. Clauss threw his fastball in the 83-86 mph range and had very good to excellent boring action on the pitch. A pretty good catching prospect who handled Eric Cordier’s plus stuff with ease was behind the plate and he boxed plenty of Clauss’s fastballs, especially down and in. We asked the catcher about Clauss’s movement afterwards and he shook his head and said "Wow". Clauss threw 2 types of curveballs, a slower one at 69-70 mph that had loose spin and a faster one at 75-76 mph that was tighter and sharper. The second could have been a slider or a different grip and we’d encourage Clauss to keep developing this. He should develop into a classic sinker/slider workhorse who can pound the strike zone and get a ton of ground balls. He is a bit more mechanical and stiff than last year, he needs to smooth everything out and use his god given ability more and gain more velocity. College coaches definitely need to follow this young man. If he smooths out his delivery and gains a few MPHs he will create big MLB scouting interest.
