2005 South Top Prospect Showcase
Johnson is a 6-0, 175 lb senior left handed pitcher with a medium frame. He has a very deceptive delivery with a quick, short arm stroke that doesn't give the hitter much of a chance to see the ball before it's on him. Johnson pulls down and off the plate hard on release in sort of a Mitch Williams style. Johnson has four quality pitches that he mixes up well, making him even harder to hit. His 82-84 mph fastball has very good life and we've seen him throw harder in the past. Both his 66 mph curveball and 73 mph slider have tight spin and sharp bite to them. Johnson's 70 mph change up also has some quality to it. Johnson was effectively wild but hitters took such poor and ineffectual swings off him that there was no reason for him to fine tune his command in the strike zone. If you're looking for a projectable, smooth throwing southpaw, Johnson isn't your guy, but if you want to see hitters walk back to the dugout after a bad at bat, Johnson is as good as it gets. He could pitch at a high level of college baseball. Johnson is also an outstanding student.
