Jonathan Montoya is a 2008 LHP/OF with a 5'7'', 150 lb. frame from Chino Hills, CA who attends Chino Hills. He has a short build but good present strength for his size. Montoya has very good arm strength for his size and age, which gives him some deception to hitters not expeciting the kind of velocity he has. Montoya pitched in the 83-85 mph range and touched 86 with a fastball that has some sink and running action. Montoya has a solid delivery, with a high leg kick to start things off and an extended arm action with clean extended release out front. He kept his weight back well and used his lower half well. Montoya threw a curveball in the 67-69 mph range with a 1/7 break and good spin, but his best off speed pitch was a 74 mph change up that had very good arm speed on release and nice life at the plate. Montoya showed good feel and command of all three pitches and has the talent to pitch at the next level. Not surprisingly, Montoya is a good overall athlete who has some tools as an outfielder, as well. He has a short, compact swing and some hand strength and gap to gap pop on contact. Montoya is also a good student.
