LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2005 National Showcase
Cody Johnson is a 2006 outfielder/first baseman from Panama City, FL with a MLB type body at 6-4, 195 lbs. He showed the physical tools and skills that make him one of the top prospects in the 2006 class, if not the very best. Despite his size and long limbs, Johnson has very good speed and ran the 60 in 6.69 and was 4.33 down to first base. His defensive fundamentals are a bit raw in the outfield but he has pro level arm strength at 86 mph and that and his speed give him the chance to be a prototype right fielder. At the plate Johnson generates plus, plus bat speed and has unmatched raw power in the 2006 class. He has very active hands in his set up and will often start his swing from a low, cocked hand position that would put a lesser athlete in a poor position to hit the ball. One of the keys to Johnson's approach at the plate is his ability to recognize pitches early and keep his hands back and drive the ball to the opposite field on off speed stuff and pitches away from him. The majority of the home runs we saw Johnson hit this year were to left center to centerfield. He can take the ball out of any part of the ball park when he centers the ball. As if he could show people he could do a bit of everything, Johnson even came in to pitch and inning and threw 90 with a 75 mph curveball. He has big league tools right now and still has a ton of physical projection. In fact, Johnson didn't turn 17 until late in the summer. He's a very good student off the field and has committed to Florida State.
