Nicholas Hom is a 2007 right hand hitting infielder from De La Salle HS, residing in Benicia, CA. He has an average build that is strong and compact on a 5'11" 180 lb. frame. Hom seems to find himself around the action a lot in a game. He plays with a lot of energy and is aggressive in the game. He hits from a slightly open stance, starting with his hands held high. Hom loves being in the box... he digs in and competes in each and every at-bat, giving away nothing. For the most part he does a nice job of working to keep his hands inside the ball and not trying to do too much in the at-bat. He is capable of driving the ball or moving a runner. With a quick bat and good hand path, he can execute as a solid two-hole type. However, when he gets a pitch in his zone he can drive the ball in the gaps and will hit an occasional dinger. The ball does get off his bat well and his lower body clears well enough to allow him to get to nice extension. On defense Hom can play 3rd or 2nd quite well, and can fill in at shortstop. He has a quick release and does a nice job of getting his body aligned to make strong, accurate throws. His hands are good and he goes to the ball aggressively, sometimes a bit overly so. With good lateral agility, his range is an asset at 3B and can also play well at 2B, where he could play deeper than at SS. Hom is a 4.55 home/1st runner and posted a 7.18 60 yard time. He is a college bound player (U of San Diego) and will have to perform at the college level to earn a pro opportunity. Long term he looks like he has the best chance to play beyond college at 2B or as a utility infielder.
