Kubin is one of the most well exposed and best known prospects in the Class of 2004. That’s enabled Perfect Game and plenty of other people to not only get a good handle on his tools but also his make up and personality. Jared is a wonderful young man with a great approach to the game and a solid work ethic. All you have to do is look at his sculpted 6-3, 220 frame and you know he works hard at conditioning and strength. He loves to play the game. Kubin’s major tool is his power potential. He’s as strong as an ox and has a power hitter’s extension and lift to his swing. We’ve seen him pull the ball 400+ feet with wood many times and every time he comes to the plate in a game or BP, everyone pays a little extra attention. Where Kubin is now is essentially where Robert Stratton, the Mets prospect and former 1st round pick, who as of early July leads the minor leagues in both home runs and strike outs, was at the same point. Their bodies, swings and power potential are pretty much identical. Stratton was a better athlete in terms of arm strength and speed at the same age, but when you’re talking about a power player, those are secondary details. Kubin is a first baseman/left fielder who will have to work hard on his defense consistently. He has good athletic bloodlines as his father Larry played several years in the NFL after a great career at Penn State. Jared is a good student who will get lots of interest from power DI programs. He could create some early round interest in the draft as well. Power hitters are in big demand these days.
