2005 Sunshine West Showcase
Gary Valadez is a 2006 catcher/third baseman from West Torrance HS in Torrance, CA, with a 5'9", 180 lb. frame. Valadez was one of the top defensive catchers at the showcase and was named to the Top Prospect Team. He has very quick feet on his throws to second base with good arm strength (75 mph), and popped under 2.00 several times. Valadez also receives the ball well with soft hands and works well with pitchers. Offensively he is a right handed hitter with plus bat speed, and he can flat out hit. During batting practice he had one of the best rounds of the day. He has a good approach with quiet hands and has a line drive swing plane. With his strength and bat speed, Valadez can put a charge into balls and shows present raw power. Valadez also has the hands and swing to hit for a good average as well as for power. He has the chance to be an good catcher who can hit in the middle of the order at the next level. He is a must follow.
