Evan Karp is a big, strong young athlete from Norfolk, VA, whose big tool is his power potential. Karp’s catching skills are on the raw side and we think he could probably end up at first base in the future. He can catch though and shows some arm strength and quickness behind the plate. At the plate, Karp generates good bat speed with a lofting, upper cut swing. There’s no mistaking his intent, which is to try to pull the ball long and far. Karp did get hold of one during one game at the showcase and drove it off the left centerfield fence for a double. An improved trigger and better balance at the plate would really improve Karp’s consistency, as he’s a rocker at the plate who starts his swing with low hands. He also has some receiving skills, but the bat is extra interesting. Evan is an excellent student.
