Quick Cal State Fullerton rotation note

Floethe threw well at the alumni game three weeks ago and has thrown well in scrimmages the past couple of weeks. He had good numbers as the Fri SP for Fresno in six starts (3-1, 2.65) in '09 before getting hurt and having TJ surgery.

Some North Carolina tidbits (2/16)

I was studying up on UNC and came to similar conclusions. They look like a solid all around team but don't look like they have an ace on Fridays or a standout except for Levi. They look like a good 2 seed in a regional who could be a low end 1 seed if things break their way.

New game times for the USC tournament.

LOS ANGELES -- Due to impending rain in the Los Angeles area this weekend, the times for the USC Baseball Tournament at Dedeaux Field have been revised. All times are subject to change and fans are advised to go online at usctrojans.com for any changes in this weekend's schedule:

Friday (February 18)
Cal Poly vs. Missouri - 10 a.m.
Cal Poly vs. North Carolina - 2 p.m.
USC vs. Missouri - 6 p.m.

Saturday (February 19)
USC vs. North Carolina - 7 p.m.

Sunday (February 20)
Cal Poly vs. North Carolina - 10 a.m.
USC vs. Cal Poly - 3 p.m.

If Saturday's game is rained out, USC and North Carolina would play at 3 p.m. on Sunday with USC and Cal Poly then playing at 7 p.m.

Spoke to ASU coach Tim Esmay (some notes)

I didn't know there were two Hahns drafted last year until I looked it up. The RHP from Va Tech was drafted in the 6th round by TB. Corey Hahn was drafted in the 26th round by the Padres. Why did he go so late? He was overlooked due to his size and he wasn't going to sign unless it was for early round money. That kid can flat out play and was the CA player of the year. He almost single handedly at the plate, in the field and on the mound (he never pitched in HS until last year and was lights out) won the CIF D1 title for Mater Dei.

There are plenty of kids in CA for ASU to keep coming in and getting good ones even though UCLA's recruiting has really stepped up lately. ASU will keep getting their share from CA and so will Arizona. Oregon has also done a great job of getting guys to go up there, which isn't much of a surprise with Horton. Those are the three main out of state schools that have been getting big time guys in CA.

It's a pretty amazing talent pool in the state because there are still plenty of players left over who stay in state at the four (soon to be three) Pac 10 (soon to be Pac 12) schools, all nine Big West schools, the five WCC schools in the state, the three WAC schools in the state, San Diego State and Bakersfield.

Impressive showing by UNC but Stanford winning 2 of 3 at Rice was also very impressive.

The weather is going to suck this weekend. Rain starting in the late afternoon in SoCal, which is why teams are bumping up their start times today to get game one in for their series. It's supposed to top out in the upper 40's with lows in the low to mid 30's tomorrow with the snow level getting down to 1000 feet if it is as cold as expected, which is unheard of in this area.

Fullerton – Big Problems / Regional team at best….

FullertonBaseballFan
FullertonBaseballFan
Nothing like pushing the panic button after five games. Fullerton sure looked like a "regional at best" caliber team today......

If you are the same fullertonalum as on the Fullerton message board, why don't you post your opinion there to give people a chance to debate your position? You post there enough. Afraid of having to defend your position someplace where more Fullerton people are posting? If you aren't fullertonalum on the Fullerton board, never mind.

In the interest of full disclosure, what PaulJoseph (a notorious hot head) wrote on the Fullerton board was that the team's performance against Long Beach was shameful. That's why people went off on him - because he is a hot head and because shameful isn't appropriate adjective for players who are giving an effort. Shameful is what would be appropriate for somebody who dogs it on the field and isn't trying.

Serrano did not say that the team's performance was shameful. What he said was he was mystified by how the team played and they didn't play like they trusted each other in that game. Slightly different, wouldn't you say? I notice you neglected to write that Serrano said the next day that he was proud of the team after they beat Long Beach.

You wrote that the C, 2B and CF can't hit and that the coaches should try other players. They have already played three C's so it's not like they haven't given a bunch of guys a shot there. Deacon is the best player at that spot. The 2B they would like to try (Barber) is hurt and can't play the field or else he would have been in there already. Kingsolver is the best defensive OF on the team and can hit RHP so that's why he's in the lineup in CF. Don't let facts get in your way.

Has Fullerton struggled to score runs this year? Yes. That is a fact. Fullerton ran into a solid SP and some good arms from UNC (lost in 11 innings), ran into a 1st-2nd round pick from Long Beach (won the game), a 6th-8th round pick from Long Beach (won the game) and an All-American from TCU. In the other two games Fullerton got 18 hits in one of them and today scored 8 runs against the 2010 MWC pitcher of the year and TCU's closer. Fullerton has faced some very good pitching and will face an outstanding pitcher tomorrow.

Mark Twain, upon hearing about his own death - "The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated."

Oustanding comeback by Fullerton today with a run in the 8th to tie it up and a run in the 9th to win the game and the series. Purke didn't pitch but it's doubtful he could do much better for 7 innings than Mitchell and Appleby did in holding Fullerton to no runs on two hits.

Cal State Bakersfield

He's in a similar environment to where he was at with Northridge in the late 80's thru the mid 90's. Starting from scratch with a D2 and/or new program, playing as an independent at a Cal State school, which means it's not difficult to get kids into school, in an area with ballplayers (not as much as the immediate SoCal area but not that far away either from there or from the Fresno area).

Boyd had their intended SOS at 40 with series already played against the Wash schools (4-2), this weekends ASU tournament, series with an improved LMU as well as South Carolina, UCLA and Fresno and five of the Big West schools (don't play Fullerton, Long Beach, UCSB or Pacific) and four midweek games with K State.

Crazier things have happened but with that schedule (and already 2-2 against WSU and ASU) Bakersfield could play their way into getting an at-large spot at a regional at Stanford or Fullerton (two likely hosts this year).

O'Connell was nails again today. 0 R and 2 H with 0 BB in 8 IP with the only run unearned after a two base error by Kingsolver on a single to CF in the 8th putting a runner on 3rd who scored on a what would have been a 6-4-3 DP. He had the sinker working with 14 ground ball outs. He only needed 70 or so pitches to go 8 IP and Serrano brought in Nick to finish off the game with 3 of 4 batters scheduled to come up LH hitters and he allowed a hit and struck out the side.

GT, they eliminated that problem when the first thing Haden did when took over as AD was to fire Kreuter. USC brought in a solid recruiting class (although part of that ranking was due to Austin Wood, who will be gone after this year).

A little surprising that LSU had trouble with bunting and situational hitting against Florida (well, not too surprising because of the Gators outstanding pitching). LSU bunted Fullerton to death and came up with a bunch of key hits in clutch situations in that series.

LSU could really use Eades to come thru in middle relief. Berry is the only reliever that Manieri has confidence in to get the ball to Ott. The only time Fullerton did anything offensively at LSU was when the starters were done for the day.

Postseason talk: Where do I stand?

A few tough games? Try nine out of 13 - series at Rice, Vandy and Texas, who are all projected to be regional hosts. And, that's on top of playing in a conference with about a half dozen ranked teams. Somebody out here has to host (hard to believe there will only be two but we'll see) and somebody has to win the Pac 10. Stanford is as good a guess for both of those as anybody out here at this point. OSU is a good team but it's not like they have played a world beater schedule to get to 16-5. Fresno (0-2), Long Beach (2-1 - good RPI, avg record) and ???

Cal dropping bsb, UCSD going D-1

There's a lot more to this decision with the Big West than just baseball.

The conference doesn't want an odd number of teams, which is why it's doubtful that only one school will be added.

The Big West is tired of taking in D2 teams making the transition to D1.

The Big West doesn't want to have to divide up the slim pickings 12 ways that they get from March Madness.

The Big West isn't too keen on Bakersfield's academics (poor in the academic standings) and the size of the school (smaller school population by far than any of the other public schools in the conf).

The Big West had a chance to add both UCSD and Bakersfield and chose not to and doesn't have any set plans at this time to bring the matter up for discussion again. Could that change in the future? Sure.

The Big West was thrilled to add Hawaii once things were worked out with 1) their football program being a football only member of the MWC and 2) travel subsidies for Big West teams traveling to Hawaii.

NCAA PROJECTIONS: Our latest 64 (4/6 -- ASK Q's)

ASU's appeal date is May 16. The field is announced on May 30. It usually takes a minimum of a month for the Appeals Committee to reach a decision and in some cases much longer (USC has been waiting for a decision on their appeal for football for almost three months). Unless the NCAA moves at the speed of sound by their standards, the odds are pretty high that ASU will be playing in the post-season this year while waiting for a decision to be reached on their appeal, which will be denied sometime around the end of June and they will be banned from the post-season in 2012.

IBF, that's pretty much what all of the people making guesses at how the selection committee will set up field do it. You can pretty much guarantee it that Irvine and Long Beach, if both are in the field - pretty good probability for both, will be playing at either Fresno, Stanford or ASU (presuming their appeal gets tied up with the appeals committee until after the field is announced as they basically push back their penalty for a year).
