Some very early PAC10 stats

BB41751
BB41751
Some very early PAC 10 numbers to look at. During the initial weekend, 113 returning PAC 10 hitters participated in the games. For the weekend, the league played about .700 baseball some of the competition was good but a lot was not.

Numbers based only on players who participated this year and last year.
Overall batting average for last weekend .301; down 1% from their last year totals
Average runs per at bat for last weekend .173; down 10% from their last year totals.
Average HRs per at bat for last weekend .017; down 28% from their last year totals.
Average RBIs per at bat for last weekend .164; down 4% from their last year totals.
Average total bases per at bat last weekend .434; down 3% from their last year totals.

Home runs down 28% seems significant. Could be because of the new bats or maybe it was because there were home runs sitting in the dugout this weekend due to injury or otherwise or as someone pointed out maybe the weather.

I think UofA comes out of the PAC 10 to face TCU. Hopefully this limb I am on is sturdy.

OSU/UO tonight, should be a good one; also UA/UNLV should be a good one; Cougs need to rebound from 2 stinkers in a row.

BTW, PAC10 HRs down over 50% year to date; runs scored only down 5%.

They take too many base on balls. Activate the bats.

Does PG do a top whatever pre season ranking of the college teams? If so, have you done that. If not, when do you expect that. Do you expect these teams to be somewhere in your top 10? Arkansas,Rice,TexasAM,North Carolina,Stanford,South Carolina,Florida

Offense up?

On a percentage basis, offensive numbers in the PAC12 are up this year when compared to the first 3600+/- at bats from last year. Some numbers are up significantly. Does anybody have a sense that this is the case across the country-that offense in general is up from last year? I see that Florida is hitting home runs at over 4% that's 3 times what the overall average was last year.

Stan and ASU are within percentage points of each other. I think it could go either way.
UCLA is about 10% behind those 2. They stroke the ball well but in the end I think they will give up to many runs to be competitive.
UA is about 15-20% behind. Hit well but don’t think they have the pitching.
Don’t see any other team making any kind of challenge for the top.
UW my surprise team
SC another surprise team. UW and USC both pitch surprising well
OSU hit better than they usually do but can’t get out of their own way when it comes to pitching and defense. Kind of uncharacteristic for them
If UO could hit, they could challenge.
Cal, another surprise team but in a different kind of way given the run they made last year and the number of returners they had.
UT. They are finding out what it takes to compete at this level.

My take on top players by position:
C -Heineman UCLA
1B-Ard WSU
2B-DiMichele ASU
3B-Mejias-Brean UA
SS-Smith OSU
LF-Conforto OSU
CF-Ray UW
RF-Jones WSU
DH-Brown UA
SP-Kuedell UO
RP- Griggs UCLA

Conference RPI: PAC 12 - 3rd behind SEC and ACC all within a couple of percent
Composite polling based on 6 polls: PAC 12 - 2 teams in the top 10; 6 teams in the top 30.

Anybody know where I can get 2013 stats for all of the PAC12 teams? As near as I can tell the PAC12 website only has 2012 and older.

In addition to those pitchers mentioned, might also look at Oest and Waddell from Virginia.

In relief, how about Engelbrekt from Oregon State.

For hitting, I also like Lassiter and Bolt from NC. I also like Spoon (Ark), Gonzalez (GT), and Laird (LSU).

My top freshman so far is Alex Bregman (LSU). Getting done at the plate (OPS .898) and at shortstop. No errors in 49 chances.

Some stuff
Oregon the second worst offensive team in the top 20 based on runs scored
Oregon 16th rated pitching/defense team in the top 20 based on runs given up
OSU #1 pitching/defense team in the top 20 based on runs given up
OSU’s run differential is almost 3 times that of Oregon for this season.
OSU has played better competition: .567 opponent winning % to .495 opponent winning %.
