Some North Carolina tidbits (2/16)

The Diamond Heels have a number of minor injuries heading out west. Levi Michael is banged up and just recently returned to practice on a limited basis. Brett Knief was held out of practice as well.

Wierzbicki has looked great at third and appears to be back in the swing of things with the bat. Sophomore Tommy Coyle has looked smooth at second and at short. The big question is who will be playing first base and how will Kent Emmanuel do as a freshman on the West Coast.

Patrick Johnson is feeling stronger than ever after recovering from shoulder surgery to join Michael Morin and Chris Munnelly in the weekend rotation.

The Tar Heels appear to have a good shot at getting back into the ACC Tournament - but realistic estimates could be peaking next season for another run to Omaha.

If NC State gets some effective pitching and steady defense - their offense will be great.

However, in my experience the Wolfpack takes after their coach - bipolar and you never know what to expect on a given day, but always play with a chip on their shoulder and play with a lot of emotion (for better or worse).

Is there a bigger rivalry today than SC\Clemson?

Personally I don't think there is a bigger rivalry than South Carolina and Clemson... two top flight programs vying for hearts and minds in the state of South Carolina and Omaha.

I think college baseball could use some more conference battles - like SEC vs ACC for instance. I think UNC/Tenn, Clem/SC, GT/Auburn etc wold all be great...

Freshman Kent Emanuel - Fantastic Start for UNC

Freshman Left Handed Pitcher Kent Emanuel pitched 8 shutout innings for the University of North Carolina against Charlotte today at Boshamer Stadium. The freshman threw 91 pitches over 8 innings with 64 strikes while not allowing a walk and only giving up 4 hits.

He ended up giving up two runs in the 9th while only one was earned while striking out 9 batters. His fastball command was superlative according to catcher Jacob Stallings after the game.

Sophomore closer Cody Penny entered the game and earned his third save of the year for the Tar Heels. The only downside for the Diamond Heels was stranding 12 runners during the game after scoring 3 runs in the first inning against the 49ers.

Emanuel threw 90% fastballs and mixed in a curve, forkball and change. According to catcher Jacob Stallings after the game the one thing that could really benefit Emanuel is a hard slider type breaking ball.

I also can confirm reports on 89-91 touching 94

Another stunning Tuesday night start for the precocious freshman southpaw. This time he mixed in more cut fastballs to right handed batters and only allowed one hit over six innings only walking one batter while striking out 6 in route to the Tar Heels 16-0 drubbing of SoCon powerhouse Elon at Boshamer Stadium (that won a series opening week against NC State).

Who would take Kendall's job...

Once you take a position covering baseball you can be a fan of the sport but have to stay impartial.

I work for Inside Carolina - and certainly have a lot of experience covering North Carolina baseball but the separation of being a fan and alumnus is not that difficult if you love the game more. Things come up all the time that you might not want to discuss or broach - but it is your job to do so.

Any job that you love going to every day when you wake up is a blessing. I just wish it was my only job

Duke vs NC State

MClements
MClements
Personally I think that Duke is close to turning the corner and making it into the NCAA Tournament. I can not figure out for the life of me why NC State is struggling beyond not getting enough pitching or out slugging their opponents. Their starting pitchers have been perfectly mediocre and their fielding is middle of the road.

Coach Avent might find his seat warming up if the Wolfpack do not make it into the ACC or NCAA tournament this season. I doubt that AD Yow would hesitate to get her own hire to turn the program around. Look at her hire at Maryland before she left - that was a home run in my book. State has the fan support and facilities to be competitive in the ACC with the amount of baseball talent available regionally.

I don't know what happened to my post as I was trying to edit it. Must have deleted it by mistake.

Freshman third baseman Colin Moran for North Carolina hit 4 home runs in 5 games while batting .529 with 13 rbi this week adding to his lead in the ACC for runs batted in for the season.

Batting average .529 17 at bats, 8 runs, 9 hits, 2 2b, 1 3b, 4 hr, 13 rbi, 25 tb, 1,471 slg%, 5 bb, 0 hp, 3 so, 0 gdp, .636 ob%, 0 sf, 0-1 sb-att, 2 po, 9 a, 0 e, 1.00 fld%.

What other performances caught your eyes this week?

National Player of the Week?

Well as a member of the NCBWA - there is an award for both the player and the pitcher of the week... normally either a starter goes crazy and pitches a no-hitter or one hitter or a closer goes bonkers to win.

However I have seen a lot of crazy offensive stat lines in the past for offensive players, but not like this in the new era of the BBCOR bats...
