WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — The Pac-12 Conference has a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Stopper of the Year Award, in addition to a semifinalist for the National Pitcher of the Year Award, the Brooks Wallace Award and the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Tuesday.
STANFORD junior RHP Mark Appel is one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, and is one of five semifinalists for the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s National Pitcher of the Year Award. Appel was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates Monday night as the No. 8 overall pick. He is also an All-America first-team honoree and a 2012 all-Pac-12 selection.
OREGON sophomore RHP Jimmie Sherfy is one of five finalists for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, which honors college baseball’s top relief specialist. Sherfy is an all-conference selection and a third team All-American.
ARIZONA junior shortstop Alex Mejia is one of five semifinalists for the Brooks Wallace Award, an honor recognizing college baseball’s best shortstop. Mejia is the 2012 Pac-12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, a first team All-America selection and a two-time all-conference selection.
STANFORD junior utility player Stephen Piscotty is one of five semifinalists for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award. Piscotty has contributed in the outfield, at first and third base, and, more recently, on the mound as a right-handed pitcher. He is also a two-time all-conference honoree and the No. 36 overall pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in the ongoing MLB Draft.
The lists for the National Pitcher of the Year Award, the Brooks Wallace Award and the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award will be narrowed to three finalists each before the winners are announced on June 30 as part of College Baseball’s Night of Champions. The winners for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, the Johnny Bench Award and the Dick Howser Trophy will also be announced that night, as will the 2012 National College Baseball Hall of Fame inductions.
