Batting Practice Highlights

Aaron Downs (2021 OF, Pella, IA) Righthanded hitter showed a fluid and hard swing looking to impact the baseball out in front of the plate and drive it to the deep parts of the field. Downs displays a very high amount of power potential with his bat that is already beginning to be unlocked in his 205-pound frame.

Josh Fitzgerald (2019 OF, Mason City, IA) Shows a linear shift into contact early and stays balanced throughout swing path. He has a high amount of jump off the barrel with a naturally lifted barrel plane. When he's able to stay on time he can really turn the barrel out front showing best contact to the pull side.

Drake Frazier (2019 OF, Cedar Rapids, IA) Took a strong batting practice at the Pre-Draft showing his quick hands through the zone working to the pull. He displays a capability to control the barrel well while being able to get the bat through the zone with intent.

Alec Nigut (2020 OF, Des Moines, IA) Sets up in a wide stance with quick hands to the ball showing explosiveness with the barrel at impact. Consistently squared the ball up with line drive contact to the pull side gap. Repeats mechanics well and has the strength to drive the ball out of the ballpark.

El Rico Riley (2019 SS, Atlanta, GA) Athletic hitter in the box with a compact stroke on a line drive plane through the zone. Able to work contact to all parts of the field. Raw strength in the bat that should continue to be improved upon.

Wyatt Stevenson (2019 3B, Gracey, KY) Generates a smooth and fluid swing in the box staying on time and getting into a rhythm at the plate. Works the ball from gap to gap, with the best power potential coming when driving the ball on the right side of the field. Had multiple balls hit off the fence in right field. 

Albert Choi (2019 OF, Downingtown, PA) Quick and direct to the baseball while being able to impact the ball with authority. Creates a bit of lift through the zone on a slightly uphill plane. Can drive the ball all over the field. 

Garrett Saunders (2015 SS, Bonaparte, IA) Capable of working hard line drive contact to all field flashing natural leverage when getting the ball into the air. Short and direct with hands producing bat speed with feel for the barrel.

William Oliver Kelley (2019 OF, Newnan, GA) Looks to impact the ball with a strong frame utilizing it well during batting practice. Lofted swing plane looking to lift the ball and drive it to the pull side of the field.

Ian Moller (2021 C, Dubuque, IA) Strong swing with a knowledgeable idea how to hit for a 2021 graduate. Often got the ball in the air on a positive trajectory and working to the middle of the field as well as to the pull side. Easy contact skills with pure power to soon follow.

Zion Spearman (2019 OF, Philadelphia, PA) Drove several balls out of the park during batting practice while showing a compact and repeatable barrel path. Present strength throughout build and utilizing it well. Creates jump when pulling the ball and turning the barrel out front. 

Tyler Brandenburg (2019 1B, Saukville, WI) Linear shifts into contact with an aggressive swing path. Line drive plane through the zone working the ball often to the pull side. Really has the chance to turn into a power threat when keeping weight back and driving the ball.

Tommy Benson (2019 SS, Crown Point, IN) The 6-foot-2 shortstop showed excellent bat speed at the plate with the ability to deliver the barrel to contact with authority. The North Alabama commit collected two sharp singles in his 4 trips to the plate.

Jayden Gibson (2019 C, Grinnell, IA) Gibon's, a Western Illinois commit, displayed good strength at the plate with the ability to turn the barrel to contact with authority. Consistently looked to drive the ball to the middle of the field an pull side gap. Collected two hits in game action including a sharp double down the left field line.

Alexander Huissen (2019 OF, Lindenhurst, IL) The 6-foot-5 outfielder utilized a smooth, naturally leveraged barrel plane through extension. Flashed good carry to the outfield when barrel and collected a double in his first at-bat of the game.

Xavier Watson (2019 SS, Cudahy, WI) The University of Illinois commit showed a direct, compact barrel path created hard contract to all fields. Watson doubled sharply to the opposite field in his last at-bat of the game.

Harrison Cook (2019 RHP, Solon, IA)  The 6-foot-5, Kentucky commit showed good arm speed on the mound while generating heavy downhill sink through the zone. Cook sat in the upper 80's while topping at 88 miles per hour with his fastball. The Solon, IA native flashes the ability to over match hitters when he's ahead in the count and utilizing off speed pitches in both positive and negative counts. The 2019 grad worked 2 innings striking out 3 batters.

Tyler Tscherter (2020 SS, Reinbeck, IA) The 2020 Iowa native displayed good arm speed through extension and generated late run with a fastball that topped at 87 miles per hour. Tscherter utilizes an aggressive approach on the mound and consistently attacks hitters. The 2020

El Rico Riley (2019 SS, Atlanta, GA) The St. Petersburg College commit was impressive throughout the day posting a 6.75 60-yard dash, topping at 93 miles per hour and showing good power potential at the plate. The Georgia native also displayed up side on the mound showing a heavy fastball that topped at 89 miles per hour.

Aaron Downs (2021 OF, Pella, IA) The Louisville commit showed very good bat speed at the plate with excellent raw power to the gaps. Homered in his first at-bat of the game, cutting through the wind to deep left center field.

Drake Frazier (2019 OF, Cedar Rapids, IA) Frazier utilized a relaxed, mature approach at the plate while driving the ball to all parts of the field. The South Dakota State commit collected 4 hits in game action including a double down the opposite field line in his last at-bat.

Kyle Riesselmann (2019 OF, Tyrone, GA) The Georgia State commit showed a knack for finding the barrel and generating solid contact. Flashed the ability to work to each gap and picked up 2 hits in his 4 trips to the plate.

Tanner Lohaus (2016 RHP, Hiawatha, IA) The Mt. Mercy University grad displayed good poise on the mound while consistently located to each edge of the plate in the mid to upper 80's, topped at 88 miles per hour. Lohaus consistently looked to work ahead of hitters and utilized a slider in the mid 70's once ahead. Lohaus worked 2 innings striking out 3 batters.

Owen Coady (2019 LHP, Larchmont, NY) The Pennsylvania commit was very impressive on the mound featuring excellent control to each quadrant of the zone with a fastball that topped at 91 miles per hour. Consistently worked ahead of hits and showed the ability to pitch backwards with both a curveball and slider offering. The New York native worked 2 shutout innings striking out 7 batters and allowing only 1 hit.

Parker Thode (2016 RHP, Ottumwa, IA) The Grand View College product showed a heavy fastball that jumped on hitters quickly in the upper 80's, topped at 91 miles per hour. Thode also flashed a very sharp, late breaking 12/6 curveball in the low 70's. Displayed good feel for each of his pitches while working 2 scoreless innings.

Connor Reed (2019 RHP, Richland, IA) The Iowa Western CC commit showed good feel for the out half of the plate with a fastball that topped at 87 miles per hour. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound right handed aggressively attacked the strike zone working two perfect innings while striking out 3 batters.

Jake Hilmer (2019 RHP, Walker, IA) Hilmer showed a clean, repeatable delivery on the mound topping at 87 miles per hour. Displayed good feel for each edge of the plate and consistently looked to attack hitters in his 2 innings of work.
