2019 SoCal Prospect (09/07/2019 - 09/08/2019)

Green v. Purple >>

9/8/2019 4:34:48 PM

Milo Villalobos (2020 RHP, Bakersfield, CA) started on the hill for team Green and looked strong early with a quick and compact motion that got in on the hands of hitters. His 11-to-5 shaped curveball showed flashes of plus ability as it falls off the table when thrown with conviction. He finished his day going three full innings while fanning three.

Xavier Franco (2022 SS, San Diego, CA) started the scoring off for team Purple with an RBI double. Franco does an excellent job of using his lower half on pitches down in the zone, driving the barrel head down and extending with a flat path through the zone. Later in the ball game he came in to pitch and posted the best velocity at the event at 85 mph. His fastball possesses two-seam running action and his quick arm gets in on right handers hands.

In the third, Jordan Trimble (2021 OF, Victorville, CA) laced a line drive triple over the first baseman and into the right field corner for team Green's fifth run in the ball game. Trimble has a quick projectable build with athletic actions all around in his game. He posted a 6.88 sixty yard dash time on day one and put that speed on display on his triple.

Michael Mulkey (2020 3B, Palos Verdes Estates, CA) came in and shut things down in the middle frames of the ball game for team Purple. In his first inning of work he struck out the side with his hard running 83 mph fastball. Mulkey was effectively working in and out and changing hitter's eye levels with intent.

Jacob Hennessey (2020 OF, El Cajon, CA) tied the best velocity of the event at 85 mph and was lights out for team Green. He also possesses a plus changeup that he turns over and creates strong run and sink at 73 mph. His breaking ball looked good with an 11-to-5 break that has more side to side action thanks to his over the top slot. He punched out three through two innings of no hit baseball. Hennessey also had two hits in the ball game with a run scored.

Aaron Garcia (2021 C, Chula Vista, CA) and Raffael Chiarella (2022 LHP, Las Vegas, NV) both had multi-hit ball games for team Green as they both battled at the plate and produced quality at bats throughout the event.

Team Green defeated team Purple 6-1.

Orange v. Grey >>

9/8/2019 1:26:25 PM

Team Orange and team Grey battled in their final game of the SoCal Prospect Showcase on day two.

Konrad Bohnert (2021 SS, Carlsbad, CA) started the scoring off for team Orange with a line drive triple that split the left and center fielder, rolling to the left center fence. He then scored on a pass ball two pitches later. Bohnert creates solid leverage in his swing from a narrow stance and high leg lift trigger. He's produced consistent hard contact throughout the entirety of the showcase. He then came in to pitch and impressed with three different pitches that all have the ability to miss bats. His free flowing arm creates heavy arm side run and sink on his 83 mph fastball.

Kade Bowden (2021 RHP, Monrovia, CA) then slashed an RBI double into the right center gap giving team Orange a 3-2 lead. Bowden has a projectable frame with strong hands at the plate that have an ability to drive the ball into either gap.

Team Grey's Esteban Garcia (2022 OF, Chula Vista, CA) had two hits and an RBI on his day. Garcia has a slightly hunched and open stance that stays in rhythm with the pitcher well. He uses his hands well on the outer half and stays short and direct to the ball.

Team Orange closed out the ball game with a solid performance by southpaw Sergio Cazares (2020 OF, Lakewood, CA). Cazares lived around the zone and pitched backwards effectively with a deceptive motion for left handed hitters. His solid 12-to-6 curveball missed bats and complemented his fastball nicely.

Team Orange came out on top 6-2.

Purple v. Orange >>

9/7/2019 8:18:36 PM

In the afternoon game of the SoCal Prospect Showcase team Purple's bats exploded in an offensive out pouring against team Orange.

The offense started in the fourth for team Purple when Michael Mulkey (2020 3B, Palos Verdes Estates, CA) doubled into the right center gap with a booming shot that made the centerfielder get on his horse. Mulkey has a large and strong frame with quick hands that possesses present pop.

Jake Kingsbury (2021 OF, Scottsdale, AZ) then tripled, driving in Mulkey and showcasing his great hands that hunt the inside half and his good base running. He has a fantastic all around athleticsim on the diamond and although he flew out to center in his last at bat, it was a hard struck line drive as well.

Jesus Villegas (2020 C, Chula Vista, CA) started the fifth off with another triple for team Purple, lacing a lined shot the other way and splitting the outfielders. He did a wonderful job of keeping his hands in, keeping his front half closed, and extending his hands through the zone. He also had a double later in the ball game going 2-for-2 on the day with two extra base hits.

Team Orange also squared up quite a few balls in game with Deleon (DJ) Cardinal (2022 OF, San Diego, CA) leading the way. He went 2-for-2 with to scorched balls and he looked confident at the plate in every appearance.

Derek Bohnert (2021 3B, Carlsbad, CA) also went 2-for-2 for team Orange and he possesses a fantastic approach at the plate that looks to drive the ball to all fields. Bohnert possesses a flat barrel plane through the zone with an ability to find extension out in front.

Team Purple defeated team Orange 9-4 in a shootout of a game.
Green v. Grey >>

9/7/2019 5:17:20 PM

In game one of the SoCal Prospect Showcase team Green and team Grey faced off in a tight battle that ultimately was decided by two runs.

Eric Weston (2020 RHP, Rolling Hills Estates, CA) struck out the first five batters he faced for team Green. Weston was heavily mixing in his 68 mph curveball that kept fooling hitters down in the zone. His command was on point early and it showed. He ended his day throwing three innings while allowing three hits.

In the fifth inning, team Green's bats exploded for the only two runs of the ballgame. Jack Boynton (2021 OF, La Jolla, CA) started things off by battling in his at bat and ultimately smoking a double into the left center gap. Boynton impressed on the day in his BP round as well with strong hands and present bat speed through the zone.

Later in the inning Matt Little (2022 C, Anaheim Hills, CA) cashed in the runs for team Green with another double which ultimately was his only hit of the day. His lower hand set creates consistent launch angle, and he's able to create leverage with his heavy linear weight shift in the box.

In the bottom half of the fifth the Grey team tried to get their sticks hot thanks to a booming triple by Nate Nejedlo (2021 C, Parker, CO). Ultimately, the triple came with two outs and Nejedlo was left stranded on third base. He ended his day going 2-for-2 against solid team Green pitching.

Saxton Sorenson (2021 MIF, Parker, CO) closed the game out for team Green and looked dominant in the final inning of the ball game. He struck out the side and showcased a polished looking four pitch mix. He throws a slider and a curveball that he can both land for strikes or manipulate as an out pitch.

Team Green defeats team Grey 2-0.

Batting Practice Highlights >>

9/7/2019 12:00:00 AM

Benjamin Kim (2023 RHP, Fullerton, CA) Creates leverage well through a hanging leg lift trigger. Smooth barrels looking to work the ball to the opposite field gaps. Uphill plane with the intent to create lift at contact.

Luke Mansy (2021 SS, Jamul, CA) Open stance to start with a long leg lift trigger for timing. Fluid swing mechanics creating strong barrel plane through the zone. Impacts the ball out in front and drives it well to the middle of the field.

Bryant Gadison (2020 OF, West Covina, CA) Start in a wide and open stance and gets to loaded position quickly. Swings the bat with intent on a smooth and lifted barrel plane. Quick and compact hand path with solid tools to work with.

Jacob Hennessey (2020 OF, El Cajon, CA) Works from a slightly closed off stance in the box with hands out. Swings the bat with intent through rotational actions. Impacts the ball well on a line drive trajectory.

Nathan Martinez (2021 SS, Murrieta, CA) Utilizes a direct hand path into contact generating barrel speed through the zone. Makes loud contact with solid jump to the gaps when elevating barrel path.

Deleon (DJ) Cardinal (2022 OF, San Diego, CA) Fluid bat path through the zone on a line drive plane. Uses the whole field well with a contact-oriented approach. Solid round of batting practice.

Konrad Bohnert (2021 SS, Carlsbad, CA) Open stance with a hanging leg lift trigger for timing. Swings the bat hard looking to work contact to the pull side.

Jesus Villegas (2020 C, Chula Vista, CA) Solid hit tools in the box. Stays short to the ball with a compact hand path on a line drive plane. Short and rotational actions. As he continues to work on consistency he should become a very reliable hitter.

Andrew Citron (2022 OF, Pacific Palisades, CA) Even stance with a simple trigger to contact. Stays smooth through the zone with quick and strong hands at contact. Generates a high amount of jump off the barrel when finding the sweet spot.
