HS Rankings Update: March 16

We’re now nearing a month into the high school seasons in some places and many talented programs in the Florida, Southeast and Texas regions have begun to solidify themselves with strong records and big wins. The top part of the rankings doesn’t see too much movement once again as No. 1 IMG Academy (Fla.) picked up a big win against No. 4 Calvary Christian Academy (Fla.) over the weekend behind another stellar Jackson Ferris performance and a pair of home runs. No. 3 Buford (Ga.) picked up three more wins to improve to 13-0 and No. 2 JSerra Catholic (Calif.) holds steady as they prepare for their season opener scheduled for the end of this week. Tampa Jesuit (Fla.) jumps up a few spots as they continue to play excellent baseball against rival programs in the Tampa area and rounds out the top-five.

With Jesuit jumping into the top-five and Lake Travis (Texas) moving up a single spot to No. 8, there’s just some minor reshuffling in the back half of the top-10 that still holds four teams that have yet to take the field so far this spring. Stoneman Douglas (Fla.) continues to hold steady just a single spot outside the top-10, while Barbe (La.) now sits at 14-0 and moves forward to No. 12. No. 15 Jackson Prep (Miss.), No. 17 Reagan (Texas), No. 18 Madison Central (Miss.) and No. 23 Lakeland Christian (Fla.) are four teams that continue to rack up wins in large quantities, as they now hold a combined record of 47-4 and are storming hard towards the top as they move into the heart of district play in their respective states.

Four new teams make their way into the rankings this week after both solid starts to their season and continued success over the last week. Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) checks in at No. 38 after a 14-2 start to the season, with a 3-1 record at the HS Showdown, while Tompkins (Tex.) checks in a single spot behind them as they haven’t lost through their first 16 games of the season. Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) has started the season 8-0 in an always competitive area of Florida and holds the only win over a highly ranked Stoneman Douglas team thus far, while Grayson (Ga.) has also started the season perfect at 9-0 in the highest classification in the state of Georgia and has a three-game set with No. 36 Parkview this week which should give some clarity to that region.

We’re inching closer to the days where almost the entire country will be playing ball at the same time, and as we get there, the rankings as a whole will really start to take shape. California schools look to be getting set to play here in the next week or so, the Coastal region has teams in certain areas starting to get games rolling and Midwest looks like they’ll have some teams playing games as early as next week. The cold-weather teams will still have to wait until April due to weather, and there are some areas across the country still waiting to get through COVID-19 restrictions to get on the field, but the widespread playing of high school baseball is refreshing as we get just over the one year mark of the day sports, and life, changed drastically.
