Alek Manoah, West Virginia

West Virginia ace Alek Manoah was dominant in his 2019 debut, a six-inning stint against Kennesaw State. Coming off of a huge summer on the Cape, expectations have been high for the 6-foot-6, 260-pound righthanded pitcher, and the now-junior did not disappoint on opening day, showing a strong three-pitch mix.

Manoah’s fastball, which sat in the 94-96 mph range and touched 97 several times, has a lot of life to it with some arm-side run to it at times. He has an obvious physical presence using his size and a high three-quarters arm slot to work the ball downhill to opposing hitters. He also mixed in a tight-breaking 84-88 mph slider that drew some empty swings from the opposing Kennesaw State batters, and while there was a slight inconsistency with the arm slot on his slider, he did a good job to keep it down and away from hitters.

His third pitch was a mid-80s changeup that was clocked as high as 87 mph that has some slight fading action to it, using it mostly against lefthanded hitters. Overall Manoah was effective pounding the strike zone with his fastball, using his heater to set up his other two offerings, something he did extremely well leading to 13 strikeouts in this game without allowing a walk. He allowed two runs (only one was earned) on five base hits and was especially dominant in the second inning when he struck out the side on just nine pitches.
