College Top 25: Much movement

Kendall Rogers

It was a wild weekend in college baseball, and though there are several changes in the latest Perfect Game College Top 25, the top two teams remain the same in Virginia and Florida State, while South Carolina continues to inch closer to the top spot.

Virginia hit the road over the weekend and captured an ACC road series win over Duke, while Florida State took care of business at home against upstart Maryland. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks had yet another perfect week that included a weekend series sweep over Brown, where they outscored the Bears 22-0 in three games

The rest of the top five includes Vanderbilt and Oregon State, who each had good weekends and moved up a spot, while the top 10 includes North Carolina State, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly, along with LSU and Oregon, who entered the top 10 at No’s 9 and 10, respectively.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Louisiana-Lafayette continues its upward trend by going from No. 14 to No. 11, while Texas and Miami each moved up three spots to No’s 16 and 17, respectively. Also, Kentucky made a nice four spot jump, going from No. 22 to No. 18 following an outstanding offensive weekend, while Tennessee, which previously wasn’t ranked, debuted at No. 19 following an impressive road series win over Arizona State.

Some teams in the rankings had noteworthy declines. For instance, Mississippi State went 2-3 last week and fell from No. 8 to No. 20, while UCLA, which dropped to 8-7 last week, had a rough 1-3 week that included a 1-2 weekend with losses to Pepperdine and Houston. The Bruins dropped from No. 10 to No. 22.

Two more teams — Mississippi and Pepperdine — join Tennessee as new entrants in this week’s rankings. The Rebels improved to 14-2 with another successful week that included a home series sweep over Arkansas-Little Rock, while the Waves improved to 12-3 after a 4-0 week that included weekend wins over Houston, UCLA and USC.

The Perfect Game College Top 25 is released every Monday during the season.
