Over the course of this series of Draft Focus profiles, we’ve talked a lot about valued commodities in the scouting world, specifically about how the value of lefthanded power may have gone up due to increased scarcity. But, there’s one commodity that seems to have remained a constant throughout the history of the game – lefthanded pitching. That’s one of many reasons that Coastal Carolina’s Ben Smith figures to do quite well for himself when June rolls around. Lefty arms, specifically ones that work cleanly and reach the low-90s with their fastball, simply do not last long on draft boards.
