Coming into 2013, most in the scouting world looked at Jonathan Gray as a possible first round candidate. Fast forward from pre-season to now and the debate is no longer whether Gray will go in the first round, but instead whether or not he will go first overall to the Houston Astros. He’s leapfrogged pitchers like Sean Manaea, Ryne Stanek, Bobby Wahl and others to become Stanford’s Mark Appel main competition for the title of most coveted pitcher in the 2013 class. That transformation to top of the round talent can’t be linked to just one improvement or another in Gray’s game. It’s been an evolution in just about every facet of his game, and he now has a chance to be a very rare breed as a professional.
