There are certain topics that are favorites in the amateur scouting community. One of those favorite topics is “big league bloodlines.” It’s not the most scientific of concepts involved in scouting, but most players with direct relatives who played at a professional level are looked at a little differently than typical players. And, when a player has a relative who was a big leaguer, or better yet was a star at the big league level, all the better. Again, the merits of these bloodlines aren’t exactly quantifiable, but it’s at least viewed as a helpful tool to see what type of athletic background a player has.

Then, there are cases like Michael O’Neill, a case where you have a player that not only has a blood relation to an outstanding big leaguer, but a big leaguer well known for his grit and hard nosed style of play. O’Neill is the nephew of longtime Yankee right fielder and 17-year big leaguer, Paul O’Neill. Of course, those bloodlines can only take you so far, and O’Neill has done an outstanding job of putting himself on the scouting map with three strong years at Michigan. In the process, he’s also proven himself to be among the toolsiest players in college baseball.
