Texas Tech
The Red Raiders sure seem to be heating up. Veteran Scott LeJeune walked and helped bring in the winning run in the ninth inning in an 8-7 home win over Arizona State. With the win, the Red Raiders improved to 15-7 on the season. Tech outfielder Devon Conley led the way at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Meanwhile, reliever Jerad McCrummen once again was nails out of the bullpen, tossing a scoreless frame to earn his first win of the season.
Upset of the day
UNC Greensboro over N.C. State
There's no question the Wolfpack is a very talented club, but they certainly lack consistency, dropping a disappointing 8-5 contest to UNC Greensboro on Tuesday. UNCG shortstop TJ Spina led the charge at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs, while catcher Cambric Moye had a hit and two RBIs. For N.C. State, starting pitcher Logan Jernigan didn't escape the first inning after walking four batters and allowing a run.
Player of the day
Jordan Patterson, UT, South Alabama
The talented two-way player is doing wonders for the Jaguars so far this season. He's batting well over .400 after tonight's performance, a win over Southeastern Louisiana. Patterson went 4-for-4 with a home run, double, three runs scored and four RBIs. He also walked once in the contest and has a sacrifice fly.
Teams feeling good
North Carolina: UNC third baseman Colin Moran went 4-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs, while freshman outfielder Skye Bolt had a triple and three RBIs, as the Tar Heels smashed Princeton 16-0 to improve to 19-1 on the season.
Georgia Southern: The Eagles hope to find their way to an NCAA postseason appearance at the end of the year, and taking care of the Yellow Jackets certainly helps. Starting pitcher Evan Challenger and reliever Matt McCall did a serviceable job keeping Tech's explosive lineup at bay, while first baseman T.D. Davis had two hits and two RBIs to lead the offense in a 5-4 win Tuesday night.
Houston: Sophomore right-handed pitcher Aaron Garza allowed three runs (none earned) on six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work in a 4-3 win over in-state foe Texas, but it was reliever Chase Wellbrock who rose the occasion the most against the Longhorns, allowing just one hit in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Coastal Carolina: The Chanticleers have had a tough campaign so far this spring, but earned a good win over ACC foe Wake Forest, 7-6, on Tuesday. Chants outfielder Colin Hering led the way at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Virginia Tech: The Hokies have one of the nation's elite offensive lineups, and took care of business Tuesday night in a 16-6 win over Liberty. Sophomore catcher Mark Zagunis led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs, while Andrew Rash and Kyle Wernicki each finished the contest with two hits and a home run each. Also, two-way player Sean Keselica hit his third home run of the season.
Louisville: Things looked bleak for the Cardinals for a while against USC on Tuesday, but they scored 10 runs the final three frames to beat the Trojans 13-6. UL catcher Kyle Gibson had a huge afternoon at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the cause.
San Diego State: Perhaps the Aztecs' brutal schedule so far this season is finally paying off. SDSU second baseman Tim Zier went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, as the Aztecs captured a 12-2 win over Long Beach State. While Zier led the way at the plate, outfielder Steven Pallares also had a nice night with two hits, one of them a double, and three RBIs.
UNC Wilmington: UNCW starting pitcher Blaze Tart allowed just a run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings of work, as the Seahawks defeated in-state foe East Carolina 10-3. While Tart led the charge on the mound, Hunter Ridge, Ryan LaGrange and Terence Connelly did the honors at the plate. Ridge went 4-for-4, LaGrange had a home run and three RBIs, and Connelly went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Belmont: Bruins starting pitcher Daniel Ludwig struck out nine, walked one and allowed just a run on four hits in six innings, as BU captured a solid 3-1 win over Middle Tennessee. The bullpen also did a nice job for the Bruins, as Jessie Snodgrass and Josh Davis (fourth save) combined for three shutout frames to end the game.
Texas A&M: The Aggies had high hopes for freshman right-handed pitcher Grayson Long going into the season, and it's easy to see why after a 2-0 win over Dallas Baptist. Long struck out five, walked two and allowed just two hits in 5 1/3 innings of work in the win. He threw 99 pitches, 59 strikes.
Gonzaga: Cory Lebrun went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three RBIs, as the Bulldogs captured an impressive 10-8 win over Washington State. Clayton Eslick and Zach Abbruzza also had productive nights at the plate with two RBIs each.
Teams wanting a do-over
Washington: In a game that only went six innings because of inclement weather, the Huskies dropped a 4-2 contest to Portland to drop to 4-15 on the season. UW starting pitcher Tyler Davis allowed two runs in three innings, while Zach Wright did the same thing out of the pen.
Kentucky: Every team has a hiccup, and coming off an emotional series win over Florida, the Wildcats had theirs on Tuesday in a 6-3 loss to Western Kentucky. WKU first baseman went 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs, as the Hilltoppers upset the Big Blue of UK.
Baylor: The Bears definitely appear to be in some trouble moving forward. SHSU starting pitcher Caleb Smith struck out five and allowed just two runs on six hits in seven innings, as the Bearkats defeated the Bears 4-2 in Waco, Texas. BU's loss overshadowed a stellar relief performance by Crayton Bare, who struck out eight in five shutout frames.
Georgia: After getting swept by Texas A&M to start SEC play, the Bulldogs' woes continued Tuesday night, as starting pitcher David Gonzalez allowed four runs on three hits in just an inning of work in a 7-5 loss to Furman. The Bulldogs are now 8-13.
Fresno State: The Bulldogs wouldn't mind having a do-over of the entire season at this point. Fresno starting pitcher Blake Quinn allowed three runs on four hits in three innings of work, while the bullpen also stumbled in a disappointing 11-4 loss to Pacific. With the loss, the Bulldogs are now a rough 4-15 overall.
Tulane: There's no doubt the Green Wave is entering a danger zone this season. Tulane starting pitcher Emerson Gibbs allowed five runs on five hits in just 1 1/3 innings, as they dropped a 5-4 decision to crosstown rival New Orleans. With the loss, the Green Wave is 12-11 overall, but most importantly, has an RPI of 95.
