Manaea, College Pitching Still
At Forefront on Eve of Season

With the 2013 college and junior-college seasons set to kick off later this month, Perfect Game is weighing in with its take on the Top 500 Prospects in this year’s draft class. We’ve provided a look at the Top 100 today, and will look at a separate group of 100 each day this week.

Indiana State lefthander Sean Manaea continues to maintain his grip as the top prospect in the class, followed closely by Arkansas righthander Ryne Stanek and Stanford righthander Mark Appel in what shapes up as a draft deep in college pitching. Thirteen of the top 32 prospects, as ranked by PG, are college arms.

This year’s draft is scheduled for June 6-8, with the Houston Astros having the first pick for the second year in a row. The order in which clubs will select has still not been firmly established pending the signing of select major-league free agents this off-season, but teams will generally select in the reverse order of their 2012 finish, though only the first 10 picks are protected under terms of baseball’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Astros will be followed in order by the Cubs, Rockies, Twins, Indians, Marlins, Red Sox, Royals, Pirates (for their failure to sign Appel in the first round of the 2012 draft) and Blue Jays.
