The third annual Perfect Game National Games will be held Aug. 13-14 at Triton Ballpark on the University of California San Diego Campus.
This year’s two-day event, formerly known as Perfect Game at Aflac, showcases many of the top prospects in the high school class of 2014, as well as some of the very best from the class of 2015.
It is held in conjunction with the Perfect Game All-American Classic presented by Rawlings, the prestigious all-star game for the top 2013 prospects that will be played Sunday, Aug. 12, at the San Diego Padres’ PETCO Park.
The prospects participating in the PG National Games will be split up by region and placed on four teams, and each team will play two games. The two winners from the first day of play on Aug. 11 will meet in a championship game on the 14th, and the two first-day losers will meet in a consolation game on the second day.
The first Perfect Game at Aflac showcase was held in 2004 and hundreds of top underclass prospects have been showcased during the event’s seven-year run. 26 PG National Games alumni have been selected in the first round of the MLB draft, and more than 160 others were selected in rounds after the first.
Budding young star and 2009 PG All-American Bryce Harper attended the event in 2008. Fellow young sluggers Anthony Rizzo and Pedro Alvarez have also attended the events in past years as they continue to make a name for themselves in the big leagues.
In the last three drafts, 23 Perfect Game at Aflac alumni from the 2007-2010 events were first round or first round compensation picks. In June’s 2012 draft, seven alumni – Gavin Cecchini, Jeff Gelalich, Lucas Giolito, Daniel Robertson, Marcus Stroman, Walker Weickel and Mike Zunino – were all first round picks.
Zunino, the third overall player selected, was a PG All-American in 2008, and was named the SEC Player of the Year in 2011 and was named the Golden Spikes Award winner this past year for his incredibly successful season for the Florida Gators.
From last year's event, 13 of the players that participated are now members of the 2012 Perfect Game All-American Classic, including catcher Reese McGuire, who was named the 2011 PG National Games No. 1 prospect.
