The summer league action around the country is rolling along and we continue our daily summer league coverage with an inside look at the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, California Collegiate League, Valley Baseball League and Alaska Baseball League.

Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League
Spotlight player: RHP Derek Mazzio, Saint Louis
After compiling a respectable 3.86 ERA with the Billikens in 2011, Mazzio has taken his game to another level at the PGCBL this summer. He has made five appearances this summer and has a fantastic 1.48 ERA in 24 1/3 innings. He also has struck out 33 and walked four and teams are hitting him at just a .255 clip.
Top performers
P Jordan Carter, St. Joseph’s: Carter compiled a 6.52 ERA for the Hawks this past season, but he has taken his game to another level so far this summer. He has started three games and appeared in four and has an impressive 1.38 ERA in 26 innings. He also has struck out 21 and walked three and teams only are hitting him at a .210 clip.
P Rob Curran, Rhode Island: Curran put together a solid 3.52 ERA for the Rams this past season and is continuing his successful ways this summer. The talented left-handed pitcher has started four games and has a 2.48 ERA in 29 innings. He also has struck out 19 and walked three and teams are hitting him at a .297 clip.
C Dain McNabb, Middle Tennessee State: McNabb only tallied a .221 batting average for the Blue Raiders this past season, but he’s taking a step forward offensively this summer. He’s hitting an extremely impressive .380 with four doubles, two home runs and six RBIs in 50 at bats. He also is slugging .580 and has an excellent .523 OBP. McNabb also has been solid defensively.
INF Justin Lacy, Longwood: Lacy finished the spring hitting an impressive .331 for his team and hasn’t disappointed so far this summers. He leads Elmira hitting an impressive .356 in 90 at bats with nine doubles, two home runs and 29 RBIs. He’s also slugging .522 and has a .437 OBP. Additionally, Lacy has a .980 fielding percentage this summer.
OF David Bishop, Mississippi State: Bishop definitely is a guy the Bulldogs could use next season. He has been a big-time power producer for Elmira this summer. He ranks second in hitting behind Justin Lacy and is hitting .342 with six doubles, seven home runs and 21 RBIs. He also is slugging .712 and has a .467 OBP.
California Collegiate League
Spotlight player: P Mitch Mormann, Wichita State
Mormann hopes to increase his stock with a strong summer. He put together a solid start in his team’s 7-2 triumph on Wednesday. He struck out five batters and allowed just a run on six hits in five solid innings of work. For the summer, Mormann has a 3.86 ERA in 23 1/3 innings. He also has struck out 17 and walked 10.
Top performers
DH Jeff McVaney, Texas State: McVaney put together a solid 2011 campaign for the Bobcats and isn’t disappointing this summer with the Santa Barbara Foresters. He’s hitting a league-best .389 in 72 at bats with five doubles, three triples, two home runs and 12 RBIs. He’s also slugging .625 with a .471 OBP. Interestingly, McVaney is 12-for-15 in stolen bases.
UTI Scott Heineman, Oregon: The Ducks should have incredibly high hopes for Heineman. He’s certainly having an impressive summer at the CCBL. The talented freshman is hitting .373 in 110 at bats with nine doubles, four triples, five home runs and 23 RBIs. He’s also slugging .664 and has a solid .426 OBP. Additionally, Heineman is 12-for-14 in stolen bases.
P Travis Huber, Nebraska: The Huskers hope his performances this summer are a sign of things to come. Huber has put together an impressive summer so far. He has started five games and made six appearances and has a 1.59 ERA in 28 1/3 innings. He has struck out 30 and walked seven and teams are hitting him at a .158 clip.
P Tom Barry, Northern Illinois: The Huskies senior is putting together an impressive summer on the West Coast. Barry has made five starts for San Luis Obispo and has a 1.61 ERA in 28 innings. He also has struck out 32 and walked 14 and teams are hitting just .184 against him. Interestingly, Barry is coming off a college campaign where he had a 3.79 ERA.
OF Greg Zebrack, Penn: Though he may not come with some of the fan fair others in this league have, Zebrack is making a name for himself with a strong summer. He’s hitting an impressive .367 with nine doubles, two triples, five home runs and 29 RBIs. He’s also slugging .678 and has a respectable .400 OBP. Zebrack hit .336 with seven home runs for Penn in 2011.
Valley League
Spotlight player: C/1B Brad Zebedis, Presbyterian
What a year it has been for the talented youngster. First, he put together an incredible freshman campaign for the Blue Hose. Now he’s performing at an extremely high level at the Valley League. Zebedis leads the summer league at the plate, hitting .441 with 14 doubles, three home runs and 23 RBIs. He’s also slugging .649 and has a fantastic .500 OBP. Also impressive is the fact Zebedis has the same numbers of walks (11) as strikeouts.
Top performers
OF Mac Williamson, Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons must like what they’re seeing from Williamson this summer. He’s having a fantastic summer campaign, hitting .372 (second in the Valley League) with six doubles, nine home runs (leads the league) and 33 RBIs. He’s also slugging .723 with an impressive .454 OBP. Williamson has struck out 21 times and walked on nine occasions.
C Josh Tutwiler, Old Dominion: New coach Chris Finwood and ODU must be pleased with what Tutwiler is accomplishing this summer. He has put together an impressive summer so far, hitting .353 with nine doubles, two home runs and 20 RBIs. He’s also slugging .500 and has an impressive .442 OBP. It’s also worth noting Tutwiler has struck out 18 times and walked on 17 occasions.
P Travis Thomas, VMI: The right-handed pitcher is having a summer to remember thus far. He has made four starts and five appearances this summer and has a 1.08 ERA in 33 1/3 innings. He also has struck out 26 and walked eight and teams are hitting him at a .197 clip. Thomas compiled a 4.43 ERA for the Keydets in 2011.
P Eric Meyerchick, St. Joseph’s: The Hawks should have high hopes for Meyerchick. He’s certainly putting together an impressive summer campaign. The talented right-handed pitcher has started six games and made seven appearances and has a 2.53 ERA in 42 2/3 innings. He also has struck out 38 and walked 13 and teams are hitting him at a .261 clip.
P Jonathan Jones, West Virginia: Jones compiled an unimpressive 5.56 ERA for the Mountaineers in 2011, but he’s making up for it with a strong summer thus far. The left-handed pitcher has started six games and has a 3.03 ERA in 29 2/3 innings. He also has struck out 29 and walked 19 and teams are hitting him at an incredibly low .189 clip.
Alaska Baseball League
Spotlight player: SS Mike Miller, Cal Poly
Miller hit .308 with just 23 RBIs in 144 at bats for the Mustangs last season, but he’s in the process of taking a huge step forward this summer for the Peninsula Oilers. Miller is hitting an impressive .349 with three doubles, a triple and five RBIs. He’s also slugging .465 with a very solid .453 OBP. Additionally, Miller has been near perfect in the field with just one error.
Top performers
P Jon Maciel, Long Beach State: Maciel compiled a solid 1.25 ERA in over 20 innings for the Dirtbags in 2011 and is continuing where he left in the spring this summer. Maciel is playing for the Peninsula Oilers and has made two starts and has yet to allow a run in 13 innings. He also has struck out three batters and is limiting opposing teams to a weak .170 batting average.
P Jordan Mills, St. Mary’s: Mills put together a solid 2011 campaign for St. Mary’s and is continuing his impressive ways with a solid summer thus far. He has made two starts and has yet to allow a run in 11 1/3 innings. He also has struck out 11 and walked eight and teams are hitting him at an incredibly blow .111 clip. Mills has allowed a total of just four hits in his starts.
P Kyle Finnegan, Texas State: Finnegan compiled an unimpressive 6.97 ERA in 10 1/3 innings for the Bobcats in 2011, but he’s more than helping his case this summer up at the ABL. The right-handed pitcher is having a solid summer for the Anchorage Bucs. He has started six games and appeared in eight and has a 2.65 ERA in 37 1/3 innings. He also has struck out 32 and walked 15.
1B Robbie Buller, Houston Baptist: HBU is one of the newest members to Division I Baseball and perhaps Buller has a chance to make a name for himself this summer and next spring. He’s having a sensational summer for the Alaska Goldpanners. He’s hitting an amazing .427 in 89 at bats with three doubles, a triple, five home runs and 30 RBIs. He also has struck out 12 times and walked on seven occasions, while he has yet to ground into a double play.
P Christian Belleque, Fresno State: The Bulldogs freshman could have a very bright future ahead of him. The talented right-handed pitcher is having a solid summer with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots. He has started four games and made seven appearances and has a 1.64 ERA in 38 1/3 innings. He also has struck out 26 and walked 13 and teams are hitting him at a .145 clip.
