PGAAC: West Team Highlights

The West squad earned a come-from-behind, extra innings victory at the 20th annual Perfect Game All-American Classic, taking down the East by a 5-2 final score. Below are highlights from the West squad, which features several impressive pitching performances and a pair of hitters who met the moment a pair of times.

Pregame



Raffaele Velazquez was the last man standing in the Home Run Derby, beating Daniel Cuvet in a swing-off to earn the title.



1st Inning

Noble Meyer started on the mound for the West after he skyrocketed up the PG rankings due to his dominant performance at PG National. He showed the same electric stuff in this one, running the fastball up to 95 and working a low-stress inning.

2nd Inning

Travis Sykora came into the Classic with a reputation as a flamethrower, and he did not disappoint. In a scoreless inning, he was up to 100 mph with the fastball, just the second player in Classic history to hit that mark (Nazier Mule, 2021).

3rd Inning

The West put together its first run-scoring threat in the third, when Roman Martin was hit by a pitch and Dillon Head and Roch Cholowsky followed with walks to load the bases. Maxwell Clark flew out to deep left field to end the inning without pushing a run across, however.

Zander Mueth worked another scoreless inning for the West, earning a punchout and two pop outs in the frame.

4th Inning

Dylan Questad deleted a leadoff walk by inducing a 6-4-3 double play one pitch later, and finished up needing just seven pitches for his scoreless frame.



5th Inning

Gabe Gaeckle rolled another double play for the West, getting Daniel Cuvet to ground back to him for a 1-6-3 double play after Braden Holcomb led off the inning with an infield single. Another ground ball back to him on the mound ended the inning.

6th Inning

Aidan Keenan worked around a single from the East’s Zion Rose, getting two strikeouts to get out of the inning untouched – one on the fastball, one on the curveball.



7th Inning

Ryder Helfrick broke the hitless streak for the West, turning around a 93 mph fastball and tripling to the warning track in dead center field on the second pitch of the inning. He scored three pitches later on an RBI grounder off the bat of Cooper Pratt.

Zane Adams continued the momentum for the West on the mound in the bottom of the frame, needing only nine pitches to complete his assignment, showcasing a three-pitch mix.



8th Inning

Justin Lee worked around two walks – with the help of Ryder Helfrick throwing out a would-be base stealer – by picking up two strikeouts, one on an 83 mph changeup and one on a 92 mph heater.

9th Inning

Cole Schoenwetter was tasked with denying a walkoff victory for the East with his 9th inning assignment, and did so by striking out the side with his fastball after a leadoff single put a bit of pressure on him.

10th Inning

Extra innings rules loaded the bases and put one out up on the scoreboard to begin the inning. Helfrick took the first pitch of the inning and smoked it into left field for a two-RBI single to give the West its first lead, and Pratt followed him up with a two-RBI double just inside the third base line that rolled to the left field wall.



Cal Randall shut the door on any idea of a comeback from the East, with just one run coming across on a fielder’s choice in the inning.
