As a league, the NECBL continues to grow as they've added a new club in each of the last three seasons with the North Shore Navigators coming back in 2021, boosting the league's number of teams up to 14. It was once again a competitive summer throughout the league as players from all over the country descended upon the greater New England area, though it was some of the more local players who were able to jump in a car this summer rather than a plane that took the NECBL by storm. North Shore's Logan Bravo (Harvard) was tabbed as the league's Stephen Strasburg Top Pro Prospect after a summer in which he led the league in home runs with 14 and finished in second in RBI, setting up what should be a big sophomore season in Cambridge. For as good as Bravo was, it was Ocean State's Travis Honeyman (Boston College) who had a summer that likely won't be replicated anytime soon as he heads back to school with a collection of hardware. Voted as the Rick Ligi Most Valuable Player, Honeyman also took home the league's batting title with an eye-opening .430 average (an NECBL record) as well as the Rookie of the Year, firmly cementing his name in the record books as putting together one of the best summers the league has ever seen. Rounding out the league's major awards was right-hander Jackson Nezuh (Martha's Vineyard/Florida State) who landed the Robin Roberts Best Starting Pitcher award after a summer in which he logged 30 innings, punched out 49 and finished with a minuscule 1.80 ERA. 

The 2021 MLB Draft saw 17 NECBL alumni drafted in the top 10 rounds and 33 total draft picks over the course of the 20 rounds, though the later start date of the draft made for a unique circumstance as four players, led by Mystic left-hander Rohan Handa (5th round/Giants), played in the NECBL this summer prior to hearing their names called.*

For the first time in the 26-year history, the Danbury Westerners took home the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup, getting hot at just the right time as they went 7-1 through the playoff round, eventually hoisting the trophy after a two-game sweep of North Shore. It wasn't an easy path by any means, first beating Newport for the right to advance and lock horns with Valley, who they swept prior to a winner-take-all with Martha's Vineyard (the top Southern Division team in the regular season) to represent the Southern Division in the championship. The Westerners' offense was firing on all cylinders throughout their run, hitting .300 as a whole while clubbing 15 home runs while the pitching staff more than did their share with 87 punch outs in 72 innings.

Any time you can rewrite the record books of a league coming up on its 30th anniversary, you know you had an excellent summer. And to be frank, “excellent summer” still might not do justice for what Honeyman did this summer with Ocean State as he literally never stopped hitting, opening the summer with a 14-game hit streak. A deeper look at the numbers shows Honeyman enjoyed a multi-hit game in a third (10 of 30) of his club’s contest, an impressive stat regardless the competition. Known for the bat as a prep, Honeyman appeared in just 14 games this past spring playing behind a veteran core at BC, but he arrived at Ocean State in mid-season form, showing off impressive bat-to-ball skills as his .430 (!!) batting average suggest, though his 15 walks to 18 strikeouts, along with 14 stolen bags, stand out just as much. He hit for some power, connecting for 7 home runs in the regular season with 8 doubles en route to winning the league’s MVP and Rookie of the Year awards along with the batting title, all of which will be welcomed into the Eagles’ lineup next spring.
