Baseball can be a funny game at times. Of the three balls Jesiah Andrade (2026, Yucaipa, Calif.) put in play Monday afternoon, it was the softest of the trio that actually fell in for a base knock as one was tracked down in deep center field and the other was a line drive right at the third baseman. One of several 12u Select Festival alums in attendance in West Palm, Andrade’s swing is a relatively short yet powerful one, utilizing the strength in his hands to generate some barrel whip through the zone. All the ingredients just mentioned were on display as he backspun a deep fly ball to center field that just continued to carry further than my initial thought at contact before the centerfielder ultimately tracked it down. While he may not have filled up the offensive stat sheet, he was a pivotal piece to ZT Elite’s win with his play behind the plate with his overall leadership skills and sound level of play. Andrade is strongly built at 5-foot-7, 168 pounds and he moves well behind the plate, often sliding to his right to block dirt balls with his chest without allowing for any advancement on the bases. He’s not afraid to throw from behind the plate, back picking at first base routinely while consistently showing off a short and quick arm stroke with accurate throws and truer carry out of the hand.

There’s a lot to like with ZT Elite shortstop Ronin McCraw (2026, Magnolia, Texas), who bats leadoff for the club and found a couple of barrels Monday afternoon. A left-handed stick with plenty of time to physically develop, McCraw is listed at 5-foot-10, 145 pounds and showed off a loose, handsy stroke with fluidity through the zone, getting the barrel out front. McCraw, similar to Andrade above, looked like he had an extra base hit off the bat on a well struck ball down the right field line if not for a perfectly positioned defender who was already shaded towards the pull side and able to make the diving grab. The looseness of his hands carries over to his defensive actions as he’s smooth with the glove and moves well on his range, showing range and athleticism up the middle.
