With the regular season in its final stages, conference tournaments and postseason play are heating up in the Northeast. The past week or so has provided some highly-anticipated matchups involving potential first round picks and some uncommitted standouts from within the region.

Perfect Game All-American Classic participant Benny Montgomery (2021, Lewisberry, Pa.) and his Red Land HS teammates matched up with Vanderbilt commit Michael Morales (2021, Enola, Pa.), and his East Pennsboro Area squad in a semifinal tilt for the conference crown that took place in beautiful Mechanicsburg, Pa. last week.




In what ended up being a 3-0 Red Land victory, Montgomery reached base twice in the low-scoring affair and despite not doing anything loud, the potential first round pick showed notable improvements to his swing mechanics. His game-changing speed was on display in the first, as he reached on an error in which he recorded a 4.15 run-time from the right-handed batter’s box that put pressure on the opposing team's third baseman from the moment it left Montgomery’s bat. In his second at-bat, the University of Virginia commit scorched a grounder through the left side that gave his team another scoring opportunity with runners on first and third. The tooled-out center fielder possesses an exceptional speed/power combination that very few can rival, as he has performed on amateur baseball's biggest stages and continually strives to get better. There have been some concerns with Montgomery’s swing mechanics and hit tool potential, as he possessed a notable hitch that worried some as to whether he would be have trouble with higher level pitching long term. The Lewisberry, Pa. native seems to have made some subtle changes during his load and has adjusted his swing path to incorporate more lift so he can continue to tap into the immense power potential we saw in various events throughout last summer. Overall, Montgomery has continued to rise up potential draft boards with his performance in ’21, as teams may find it too difficult to pass on someone with this kind of skill and immense upside.
